College athletes, no doubt, are in an egregiously exploitive arrangement. I hope @KingJames centers race/racism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy in the upcoming @HBO documentary. #athletics

@EddieComeaux@KingJames@HBO@USATODAY I can't agree more. He still faces discrimination even after his success! It's quite irrational to still be hearing "shut up and dribble" for simply having a valid opinion. I assume he would feel strongly about this issue as well.

@mpare004 @dcmireles It's interesting that even with less than 3% of them pursing professional careers in sports, they seem to be pushed to an extent that restricts them to focus only on college sports as if they are all trying to achieve professional careers in sports.
#UCR50 @dcmireles
It's important that coaches and administrators help college athletes find a balance between athletics and academics for their better future. Just focusing on one doesn't healthily prepare these students for a successful future.

@akim_122 @dcmireles It's quite unfortunate though, that they even have to go an extra mile to make the effort to make money without being penalized. They shouldn't have to worry whether they will be able to compete for trying to make their own money to survive.

#UCR50 @dcmireles It's amazing how the NCAA can gain so much in revenue using the faces of college athletes, but to their standards, by labeling them as "student-athletes" they are ineligible of being compensated for the sake of amateurism. Ironic.

@_margaritamonge @dcmireles I appreciate how you highlight that they turn a blind eye because that's what makes this issue more disturbing and persistent. The progress towards reformation will only delay further if people keep ignoring the fact that this issue still prevails.

Why should women be denied any position for coming out as "too strong" for a women? It's saddening to know that we had to be standardized by what men thought was acceptable, and more so since it isn't completely resolved yet either. #UCR50 @dcmireles https://t.co/hzuCM83QV0
@akim_122 @dcmireles Agreed! Racism sadly persists to this day; yet, I think at least we're progressing by admitting that there IS racism because we are recognizing that we need reformation. Now NCAA requires that at least one minority be interviewed for every coach position.

I look forward to the day we can achieve complete harmony where discriminations of race no longer prevails. Even though it still persists, sports exemplifies its strive towards unity of one team that overlooks any difference in race.

@akim_122 @dcmireles It's crazy because I always see the same group of girls practicing softball outside on our school fields, whether it rains or shines. That just shows a glimpse of how much they sacrifice their holistic college experience all so that they can dedicate to playing college sports.
It's one thing for students to be involved in academic clustering in order to be kept eligible to play in sports, but it's another thing for those in charge to allow this academic fraud to persist all because of the emphasis on winning.

@akim_122 @dcmireles I think that can definitely be a valid reason for this statistic outcome. I feel like it's innate that men tend to be more competitive and prideful because it's more important to them that they appear strong as men as society praises men with these qualities.

More than imagined, college athletes succeed in college sports as a result of the students wanting to escape failures, but is it honestly ideal to continue to find success by avoiding failure?

@akim_122 I agree! What's even more alarming is how they are able to defend themselves by claiming that it is because of the "market forces", yet they're completely disregarding the fact that these market forces are unreasonably driven.
@dcmireles @akim_122 #UCR50
I always imagined the athletes would be the ones being rewarded, and rightly so, but I stand corrected. Is it justifiable that coaches are unduly paid in private while athletes work hard only to be worked harder? #UCR50 @dcmireles

@rodrigu36505454 @dcmireles It's quite saddening to know that college athletes suffer from receiving fair treatment; yet what's even more distressing is that this problem remains unresolved because of the very ignorance of recognizing this problem to still be prevalent. #UCR50 @dcmireles @rodrigu36505454
