There’s reflexivity at play in these decisions that is more descriptive than your “VC narrative grab” point.
If the investor network is less dense or more adversarial, then talent is implicitly being pushed away. And if your classmates or colleagues already departed for west coast and you want to hire them for your next gig, you’re implicitly being pulled to west coast.
VC narratives only have to play at periphery of this to kickstart the reflexivity
This is how modern factories should be thinking about their operations. The higher fidelity between data and decision, the more efficient the end-to-end process becomes
The best factories will optimize for the ingress of telemetry and the egress of intelligence to the operational edge
It's cool to have an intelligent ERP, but if it just shuttles data back and forth to your WMS, which then is used by your shift lead who then has to disseminate that knowledge to your technicians- at 80% fidelity per hop then 26% signal survives the company brain<>factory floor round trip

HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY @noxmetals
A mission that started out as a summer time high school job at my dad's shop, to the past 365 days of nothing but thinking about metal.
>22 US manufacturing jobs created
>hundreds of deliveries to American machine shops
>more weekend and emergency orders than I can count, to keep American manufacturing going
>brought life back to an empty Detroit factory
>enjoying every damn second of it
more saws. more metal. more code. more factories. more truckloads. more jobs. more reindustrializing america.
recently spent a weekend in the factory with the @noxmetals team
they are willing to run to the absolute ends of the earth to do what other service centers won’t - faster, better, cheaper and cooler
all ~20 people, even machine and forklift operators, use Claude and/or Claude Code to be more effective and efficient at their jobs - and they’ve got engineers on the team building internal software to make the machines more efficient and effective at their jobs too (which is cutting metal)
the curiosity, energy and grit coming from their team is infectious and it is a mistake to root against them
Killer case for edge inference is robots working in space.
That market is bigger than terrestrial space and thus worthy to think thru what edge compute looks like from first principles
Have we considered that we may be fitting a problem to the solution instead of actually solving the problem? Nvidia Jetson chips are not designed from the ground up for edge inference, and Nvidia software (ie trt) produces abysmal performance results on their edge devices (relative to the server scale). This is clearly not the optimum.
If we design the entire compute infra stack (software and hardware) for edge inference first, it will beat the latency and unreliability of network connections.
Great trip to El Segundo @Antifund
We believe heavily in the future of American manufacturing and the re-industrialization of America🇺🇸 @geoffwoo
