America's deadliest industrial disaster killed mostly Black men — which is exactly why you have never heard its name. Hawk's Nest Tunnel. West Virginia, 1930.

Thousands of Depression-desperate workers — roughly two-thirds of them Black migrants — were sent to drill a three-mile tunnel through a mountain of nearly pure silica, DRY, without masks, for a Union Carbide project. Dry drilling filled the shafts with glass-fine dust. The companies knew what silica did to lungs.

Men began dying within MONTHS — silicosis, suffocation from inside. Modern epidemiology puts the toll at roughly 764 dead.

Some who died were buried in unmarked graves — dozens in a farmer's cornfield, so the pace of death wouldn't slow the digging.
