In 1960, physics laureate Ivar Giaever, demonstrated a tunnel effect through a thin layer of oxide surrounded on both sides by metal in a superconducting or normal state. The tunnelling phenomenon in quantum physics means that particles can pass through barriers that they should not be able to squeeze through according to classic physics.
His experiment provided evidence of the ‘energy gap’ in superconductors, which was one of the most important predictions of the theory of superconductivity.
He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics 1973 for his experimental discoveries regarding tunnelling phenomena in semiconductors and superconductors.
His work on superconductivity led to worldwide recognition.
