I like Roddick (& Im told this is old & they subsequently corrected) but this is why the overconfidence/bravado of podcast culture is sometimes a massive turnoff for me. Ex player perspective often invaluable,but maybe a brief reread of the updated rules before hitting 'publish'?
Absolutely awful insight. In fact, it's not even insight, it's just flat out wrong. They can test you any time they want, which is as it should be. Yes, there's a 1-hour window to facilitate testing and smooth it logistically, but "surprise tests" kind of rely on, well, surprise
to begin with, but 'player empowerment' would be parking the commodifying/content aspect for a moment, and thrashing out these privacy refinements as a core part of initial roll out - w/player consent at its heart rather than the afterthought we're now seeing.
Perhaps, but the initial off-court cam "engagement drive" was also so self-evidently unethical, poorly thought out, it was inevitable it would fall foul of player privacy concerns whether from Coco, Iga or anyone else.
I'm not completely sold on these gym/waiting area livecams 1/
Nod to Coco Gauff here… @Wimbledon sends players an email detailing exact locations of off-court cameras and how footage will be used. Player empowerment works…

The Israel issue and the oligarchy issue are becoming increasingly intertwined. The U.S. is undergoing third world levels of media consolidation and it appears to be at least partly motivated by partisanship for a foreign country.
serena williams is back to tennis, on her terms.
she is also the main character in another story unfolding across sports, about whether or not glp-1 drugs should — or ever will be — classed as performance-enhancing

Needless to say, domestic violence, war crimes, mental health...deserve so much better than this toxic "fandom/social industrial complex" (a term I'm reserving for future reference).
Sadly, this mode of 'fandomised' social commentary is now a norm & unlikely to go away.
We saw it w/Djokovic's antivax+iffy wider beliefs being scrutinised through the fan war lense;
We saw it w/the Peng disappearance when ppl pulled out 'bingo cards' tallying up which player 1/
historically illiterate whitewashing bc of something their fave said.
Mass trivialising of deeply disturbing issues - a partisan but also grossly infantilised mindset w/its priorities completely askew
This isn't "terminally online kids", but often prominent ppl in their 30s/40s.

/fave commented;
We've seen it with the *excruciating* discourse over players mental health where ppl shield or freely stigmatise player behaviour depending on who they like.
And we see it in war/conflict where ppl think their fandom "passports" them into weighing in with 2/
Svetlana Kuznetsova interview for Roland-Garros
"I just spoke to mom of Mirra and said, "Look, you can relax now, at least you have one, now it's a little bit a release for her... and I think now she can just not have so much expectations"
📽️Roland-Garros
Again, Rus deserves all censure and more, but this selective symbolism will just cont to jar w/large majorities across world.
For some reason the US, a serial lawbreaker, implicated in criminality in mult global arenas, hostile to multilateral institutions is hosting world cup
As Andreeva celebrated her win, a pair of fans inside Chatrier whipped out and waved a Russian flag to celebrate Andreeva’s country.
A #RolandGarros security guard quickly swooped in and had them put it away in the guy’s purse.
Her experience clearly proving definitive here, but shouldn't obscure fact she's always been a mature player, with this ability to recalibrate and for most part remain mentally anchored (even in her losses), perhaps a defining feature.
My read before the match was that Mirra's adaptability, and abilities from back of court placed her ahead of some her more static power-driven peers in dealing with challenge posed by Chawlinska. 1/
Kostyuk plays a physical game, but also notably well balanced, in her anticipation, court coverage. Same goes for her service action and drive volleying for example, well timed, repeatable motions, but no less potent and full of intent. Progress quite understandable rly
