Stargate Trivia: Window of Opportunity
We had no idea this episode would become so beloved by fandom and yet, looking back, it’s easy to see why it has. It’s one of those "fun" episodes with a fairly straightforward premise that allows our characters to shine in ways unexpected. Specifically, Jack and Teal’c who, in the past, have relied on Carter and Daniel to handle the science and Ancient translations, and suddenly find themselves having to step into their team members’ shoes.
Yes, it’s our version of Groundhog Day. And yet, in its earliest form, the pitch for this story was very different, much darker in tone. Originally titled Ad Infinitum, it involved the team gating to a planet and becoming trapped in a seemingly endless time loop orchestrated by a dying race seeking to buy more time to come up with a solution to an impending armageddon (which became the backstory of the device’s genesis mentioned in the episode by Malakai). Exec Producer Robert Cooper suggested another spin on the time loop angle and, while I was dubious at first (“Isn’t this Groundhog Day?”I remember asking. “Yeah,”was Rob’s counter.), I was proven wrong. Now, the “Groundhog Day” episode has become a staple of most every genre show.
While there’s a lot to like about this episode, it was the “time off” montage that stands out. And it almost didn’t happen. The episode was timing short, it was clear we would need to come up with some extra scenes, and that gave Exec Producer Brad Wright (@bradtravelers) the opportunity to do something he had always wanted to do: see our characters golfing through the stargate. And so, several scenes were added (they were all scripted, not improvised as some fans assumed): the juggling, Teal’c’s repeated door run-in, Jack riding his bike through the corridors of the SGC, Jack trying his hand at pottery, the golfing through the gate and, oh yes, THE KISS. The latter was my former writing partner Paul Mullie's idea - in his pitch, an opportunity we could not pass up. Note: We made sure to have Jack tender his official resignation before dipping Carter and planting one on her, just to make sure we didn’t catch any flak from our Air Force tech advisors.
One of the first pieces of Stargate-related artwork I put up on my office wall was some concept art from this episode - the stargate itself. As the seasons wore on, so did that original sketch, gradually fading away. My then writing partner mused that once the sketch vanished, it would signal the show's end. It took well over six years but , in the end, he was right.
In a word" "Wow."
Stargate fans continue to amaze. It's been two weeks since the show's cancellation was announced and they’re still as energized and active as ever, lighting up social media with their love for the franchise.
And I keep being asked: Will it make a difference? My answer is "Yes" and "Don't know"...
It reminds me of when Dark Matter was cancelled back in 2017 and the fan backlash was so intense that Syfy reportedly called an emergency meeting to discuss damage control. They considered making a public statement to quell the fan furor but, ultimately, elected to remain silent. And, eventually, the storm subsided.
Eventually.
But this time…this feels different. The Dark Matter fandom was small but organized and very angry. The Stargate fandom, on the other hand, is remarkably large, incredibly well organized, and - if the last two weeks are any indication - possibly even angrier.
I'm on the outside on this so I can't tell you what The Powers That Be are thinking but based on pure conjecture...
Have they noticed the fan response? Oh, safe to assume they have definitely noticed.
Have they been surprised by the scale and ferocity of the fan response? I'm going to assume yes. The fan pushback has been worldwide and intense.
Are they thinking "If we could harness this type of fan engagement to help launch a new show, it would be a huge asset!"? Again, given the sustained enthusiasm and global reach - I'm sure it has crossed their minds.
Are they thinking "Fandom passion can be a double-edged sword. I wonder if there have been examples of other genre shows whose performances have suffered due to intense fan response?" This one's a little trickier. The data scrapers and algorithms monitor vocal/negative sentiment, but how much weight executive leadership places on analogous data is always up for debate.
But will it all make a difference in the end? So far, yes, it has already made a difference, for many of the reasons outlined above.
So will it make a difference for the future of Stargate? I honestly don't know. From a marketing standpoint, this is a public relations coup waiting to happen. Acknowledge that the fans made a difference - and recognize that the excitement they've shown over the past two weeks won't stop at a relaunch. It will carry every episode. They've proven this series is theirs, and they won't let it fail. They will be the core of the new Stargate, a core that will only grow as they introduce the series to friends, family, and complete strangers, just as they have always done.
But that's just me. In the end, I'm just the guy who helps create the world, the words, the characters on the page. I'm the one who helps bring them to life with an amazing cast and crew so that you can visit with them and make them a part of your lives. I'm not the guy making the decisions.
One thing seems certain: the execs have taken notice. Now we'll see what they do with that knowledge.
A lot of folks have asked why I jumped into the #SaveStargate campaign.
Truth is, this was never about how many episodes I appeared in.
It was about supporting friends, standing behind a cast and crew I respect and recognizing one of the most passionate fan communities out there. The Stargate universe has meant a great deal to a lot of people for a very long time.
When people care that deeply about something and work that hard to keep it alive, I’m happy to lend my voice.
Some things are worth getting loud about.

Hello Stargate universe!
I truly enjoyed my time as part of the Stargate Atlantis family. “ Colonel Marshall Sumner”. Many of the cast are still in my life to this day. That’s rare. This community is rare. #SaveStargate
LFG!!!!!
It's wild that two weeks after Stargate's cancellation, the majority of the responses to the majority of the @primevideo posts continue to be Stargate-related.
No matter what happens. Come what may. I am so F….n proud of this fandom and how you all have come together.
Stargate fans really are the best ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What the hell :( I was so hyped for the new #Stargate series. It’s not too late to fix this! Let @martingero@BaronDestructo and the team cook, Stargate has a strong identity and I’ll never stop hoping for more of just that.
Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.
There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this...
Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.
As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.
My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.
