California’s Dream Is Dead

“The music plays on. No one is left who can still hear that it stopped.”

California’s dream is dead.
Almost no one notices.

After 1945, successive waves of migrants moved west and built a broad middle class on solid ground—home ownership, steady work, ordered streets. That ground has been eaten away.

Productive residents still leave by the hundreds of thousands each year. Tent cities now own the sidewalks; in documented cases the tents offer more comfort than the cramped condominiums of the working poor. Fire hydrants stand dry and rusted while the hills burn again. Permits move by personal connection, not by written rule. The justice system protects the institution’s private speech and pursues those who bring it into the open.

A fabricated poll once briefly placed the incumbent mayor ahead. It was later waved aside as a “short-term social experiment.” No conspiracy was needed. The episode simply laid bare a governing culture that has long preferred convenient narrative to any stubborn duty to the facts.

The outer forms of democracy remain. The living substance has drained away. The Smoke Out

“This distance is no abstraction. It is the last remaining ground.”

Smoke is already inside the walls.
The defenders are coughing.

Germany and Japan have remained for eighty years inside a postwar enclosure, sheltered by a distant power and bound by their own constitutions. The shelter is filling with smoke.

Manufacturing employment has fallen quarter after quarter. The industrial base that once underwrote survival is being hollowed from within. One in ten of those aged twenty to twenty-four is neither working nor in education or training. In Germany, political life has narrowed to firewalls and the drive to outlaw the Alternative for Germany; language long barred from public use is spoken in the open. Farther east, the Kurils question has been raised again. Sino-Russian joint air patrols and maritime-strike exercises have entered the Sea of Japan. Operational planning against Japan has moved from contingency to active preparation.

Internal decay has left no reliable means of remaining inside.
The pressure drives outward. The impulse gathers force.

Both societies treated the 1945 settlement—the Cairo Declaration, the Yalta understandings, the fixed map of the Kurils and southern Sakhalin—as final. When the surrounding order shifts, the exit will not be measured. It will be a break into the open.

For the United States the lesson is plain. Entanglement turns a regional spasm into a general crisis. Resources spent propping up another society’s collapse are resources denied the continental base—its energy, its industry, its borders. Clear-eyed distance is not indifference. It is the first condition of survival in a multipolar system.

This distance is no abstraction. It is the last remaining ground.

Last night the FBI arrested an individual - Jessica Bowie - who allegedly swore allegiance to ISIS and planned to carry out a deadly attack with explosives on the New York State Capitol.

In her own words, as alleged in the complaint - Bowie wanted to “destroy as much of the building as possible” and “kill the Senators while they are meeting.”

The alleged plans were in advanced stages to where the subject had conducted surveillance at the state Capitol at least 5 times and purchased materials to make an explosive device.

She has been charged with attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
