“The conduct by Pakistan in this matter is indefensible. Mr Khan is clearly the subject of extreme political persecution, now threatening his life. The British government must protest in the strongest terms.”

It’s a genuinely heartbreaking story to read detailing some of the appalling conditions he is ‘living’ in.

Imran Khan’s biggest political mistake may have been that he never built a strong lobby outside Pakistan. He trusted his people too much. He believed that, no matter what happened, the people of Pakistan and its institutions would stand with him in the struggle to make Pakistan a great nation.

His honesty often came at a personal cost. He upset friends and even family because he refused to compromise on what he believed was right. He kept his children away from his politics because he wanted his family to remain separate from his political struggle. And if they ever chose to enter politics, he believed they should start from the ground up, like everyone else.

He wanted PTI to be a gift to the people of Pakistan, not a family business, not a dynasty, but a political institution that could give every Pakistani a voice.

He wanted the younger generation to believe in Pakistan again, so they would stop dreaming only of leaving the country and instead dream of serving and rebuilding their own nation.

He wanted peace with Pakistan’s neighbours. He believed nations should talk through their differences so that the region could stop wasting its wealth on weapons and start investing in its people.

He dreamed of a Pakistan balanced between the right and the left, a society mature enough to tolerate opposing ideas. He wanted liberals to understand conservatives, and conservatives to understand liberals. He wanted loyalty to the nation and service to humanity to come before personal interest, family privilege, political ideology and the hunger for power.

He wanted a Pakistan where being a patriot meant serving the people, not merely controlling them.

Perhaps that was his biggest political weakness: he believed that the people he was fighting for would never leave him alone.

And yet today, when he sits in solitary confinement, there is something deeply painful about the silence surrounding him.

For a man who spent decades telling Pakistanis to stand for themselves, it is heartbreaking that, in his darkest hour, so many Pakistanis appear to have left him standing alone.
