I like Face ID a lot better than any kind of fingerprint scanner.

Here's why.

Face ID isn't necessarily "faster" than the top-tier FP scanners. I'd say they're around the same in terms of speed.

I don't prefer it for the speed, I prefer it for the convenience.

The #1 interaction I have with my phone is checking notifications and seeing what's up. With Face ID, I can do that directly from the Lock Screen without having to unlock.

When a notification comes in, here's what happens:

- I pick up my phone.
- Screen wakes automatically. Apple's auto-wake tuning is amazing, so it never misses.
- By the time I bring my iPhone in front of me, Face ID has already unlocked the device and revealed all the notification content right on the Lock Screen. I don't have to go to the home screen to check what's happening.

I like it for the fact that it's automatic, and it's seamless. I don't notice there's a lock until someone else picks up my phone and my notifications don't show any sensitive content to them.

Here's how I check notifications on a FP scanner phone:

- I pick up my phone.
- I unlock the phone using the FP scanner and it goes to the home screen.
- I drag the notification panel down and find my notifications there.

See? It's "pick up the phone" vs. "pick up the phone, scan the fingerprint, and then drag down the notification panel". It's 1 input vs 3 inputs.

Yes, I can choose to show my notification content on FP scanner phones at all times, but I don't wanna do that since it's a severe breach of privacy. Anyone could read all my notifications without unlocking.

When I don't wanna check notifications and instead wanna open an app, Face ID is equally good compared to FP scanners.

- On a FP scanner phone, I tap and hold the scanner to go to home screen.
- On a Face ID iPhone, I swipe up to go to home screen.

The process is equally convenient on both since they both require 1 input.

"Androids also come with face unlock, so they're the best of both worlds!"

Not really. The face unlock that comes with Android phones isn't Face ID.

- They don't work in low light and pitch dark. Face ID does.
- They don't work when you have a bright light source behind you, like sun. Face ID does.
- They don't work with a mask. Face ID does.
- They don't work with my sunglasses or my color-changing anti-glare glasses. Face ID does.
- They don't work in any weird angle, like when I'm lying side ways or my face is half buried in a pillow. Face ID does.

(This is based on my testing of face unlock on Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung S23 Ultra)

Face ID on newer models (iPhone 13 and beyond) is really good at working at weird angles. It rarely disappoints.

I've also tried using both the FP scanner and Face Unlock on Android phones at the same time, but it gets confusing instead of making things easier.

"Should I just tap the scanner from the AOD or wake the screen to use the Face Unlock?" - this is the question I get every time. So, I just end up choosing the main biometric method of my phone.

Not to mention Face ID is used for tons of things like verification, payments, logging in to accounts, and more. You can't use Android's face unlock for all of that.

Is Face ID perfect? No! It has its weaknesses. The biggest one is, it doesn't work if your phone is lying on the table a bit away from you. That's where FP scanners shine.

But in my use case, the convenience and perks offered by Face ID outweigh its limitations.
