BREAKING: Rowdy session in the House of Representatives as Rep member Agbese denies backing Ugochinyere for minority leader, says his signature was forged
During today's plenary, Agbese raised a point of privilege alleging that his signature was forged on a document nominating Ugochinyere for the position of minority leader of the House of Representatives.
The Benue lawmaker also dismissed social media reports alleging that he received $50,000 to support Ugochinyere’s bid.
But the situation escalated when Ugochinyere sought the Speaker’s indulgence to make a personal explanation, insisting that the allegations made against him on the floor and during a live broadcast could not go unanswered.
The Imo lawmaker flatly denied the forgery allegation, claiming that Agbese personally signed the nomination form supporting his aspiration for minority leader in the presence of several lawmakers who could testify to the development.
Ugochinyere's statement immediately triggered loud protests from Agbese, who repeatedly interrupted him, shouting, “I never did that!”
The exchange degenerated into a shouting match as lawmakers from both camps joined the fray, forcing the Speaker to repeatedly call for order while some members attempted to calm the situation.
Responding, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen acknowledged Agbese’s complaints and assured him that the matter would be addressed during a closed-door meeting of minority lawmakers later in the day to resolve the leadership dispute.
BREAKING: 61 out of the 81 opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives have nominated Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere as the next Minority Leader following the defection of Kingsley Chinda from the PDP to APC.
Majority of lawmakers who signed the letter addressed to Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, are drawn from the NDC, ADC, APGA, LP, PRP, APP, APM, SDP, and Accord Party.
With the overwhelming majority, Ugochinyere, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), is now set to become the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives but there are rival moves by some lawmakers working against his nomination with rumours of them supporting Hon. Frederick Agbedi, the member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State.
The lawmakers believe that Ugochinyere belongs to the APP, one of the smallest parties in the chamber with only two members and they're also saying that the position was vacated by Chinda, who is from the South South hence it would be expected that someone from the zone takes the position.
Attention is now focused on Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and whether the House leadership will formally recognise the nomination submitted by the 61 opposition lawmakers.
Governor Okpebholo's intervention at the Edo Broadcasting Service is set to see the facility overhauled with plans underway for a complete rebuild, solar power installation for uninterrupted broadcasts, and delivery of 2 additional vehicles for reporters to cover government activities.
