On September 6, 1997, an estimated 2.5 billion people watched the same thing at the same time. That number is almost impossible to hold in your mind. In 1997, there were roughly 5.9 billion people on Earth. Nearly half of them found a screen.
Diana, Princess of Wales, had died on August 31 in a Paris tunnel. The weeks that followed broke every category the press had for public grief. Flowers piled outside the royal residences until the scent reached the end of the block. Queues outside St. James's Palace stretched for half a mile. Some mourners waited six and a half hours, in the dark, to file past her coffin for less than a minute.
The funeral cortege moved at walking pace through central London. A million people stood on the route. Most said almost nothing. The silence was the thing reporters kept coming back to.
Inside Westminster Abbey, 2,000 guests attended the service. Outside, loudspeakers carried every word to the crowds along the Mall. When Elton John finished 'Candle in the Wind,' the applause from the streets bled through the Abbey walls. It was the first time a Westminster Abbey service had ever been interrupted that way.
The BBC and ITV had aired royal funerals before. Nothing had come close to this. In Britain alone, more than 32 million watched from home. Globally, networks from Japan to Brazil to South Africa carried it live. The 2.5 billion figure, compiled from broadcast data across 187 countries, made it the most-watched television event in history to that point.
She was 36 years old.
The scale of what happened on that Saturday in London still resists easy explanation. Journalists who were there have spent the years since trying to describe the quality of the silence on the streets. Some have called it collective grief. Some have called it something closer to shock, the kind that leaves a person standing in place without knowing quite what they are standing for.
The queue, the silence, the applause through the walls.
She had been the most photographed person on Earth. On September 6, 1997, the world stopped to watch her go.
The applause breaking through the Abbey walls was unplanned, unrehearsed, and entirely unstoppable. No one had told a million people on the street what to do when the song ended. They just did it.

Il 31 agosto 1997 moriva Lady Diana. Aveva 36 anni.
Diana, the former Princess of Wales, tragically died on August 31, in 1997 at the age of 36. Today we commemorate the 29th anniversary of her death. Mays she rest in peace🕊
On june 23 1997, Diana had a private lunch with author Tina Brown and Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Author Tina Brown wrote about that last lunch, 2 months before her death in the new Yorker article dated September 1997 amd titled a "Woman in Earnest"
"We talked about her sons William and Harry. 'All my hopes are on William now' she says, 'I dont want to push him. Charles suggested he [William] might go to Hong Kong for the handover. But he said: 'mummy must I? I just don't feel ready."
"I try to din into him all the time about the media, the dangers and how he must understand and handle it. I think its too late for the rest of the Family but William, I think he has it. I think he understands. I hope he will grow up to be as smart about it as John Kennedy Jr. I want William to handle things as well as John does"🔥
What an chilling read it makes especially when we now see that her worries for William when it comes to the media were warranted. It was as if she could see the media harrassment and pressure that he would be targeted with in his future life.
And yet she got it right to say "William has it, he understands"
William truly has proven that he has it in him to withstand media pressure and targeted harrassment. He understands the game and the players and oppose a dignified silence to their bait, while fiercelessly blocking any press intrusions into his private life and that of his family👌🏽
Reading this passage about Diana's hopes for William truly reinforces how proud she would be of the man he has become and of how he handles media pressure on him and his family.
How proud she would be of the Husband and father he has become, one who loves and prioritise his wife and children above everything else and cherishes and protects them, fiercely❤️
It is eerily poignant that 28 years after her private Lunch with Tina Brown and Anna Wintour, William sat with Eugene Levy on the "Reluctant traveller", stating unequivocally everything Diana had wished with certainty he would grow up to do:
“I hope we do not go back to some of the practices in the past, that Harry and I had to grow up in, and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.” Prince William said.
“If you’re not careful, you can intrude so much into someone’s life that actually you start unpicking everything. And growing up, I saw that with my parents, the media were so insatiable back then it’s hard to think of it now, but they were much more insatiable. They wanted every bit of detail they could absorb. They would know things, they’d be everywhere. And if you let that creep in, the damage it can do to your family life is something that I vowed would never happen to my family."🔥
"And so, I take a very strong line about where I think that line is, and those who overstep it, I’ll fight against,"🔥
"But equally, I understand, in my role, there is interest; you have to work with the media. So, you have to have a grown-up sort of situation with it as well. It’s about knowing where the line is and what you’re willing to put up with.”👌🏽
Look Diana, Mothers' dying wishes for their children do come true❤️🩹
On August 21, 1997, Diana and a 15 year old Prince William had a last mother-son lunch in Chelsea, London.
10 days later, on the night of August 31 1997, William later revealed that he struggled to sleep in Balmoral where he was holidaying with the RF.
He said that "throughout the night, he could not sleep and experienced an awful sense of dread, and an unsettling anxious feeling" unaware of what was unfolding in Paris at the same time💔
It was hours later in the morning, when his father woke he and his brother up to deliver the devastating news of the death of their mother during the wee hours of night, that William understood the unsettling sense of dread he experienced throughout the night: the physical and spiritual separation from his mother ❤️🩹
Well and so, Diana did accurately call him "my soulmate"🕊

We have decent forest cover, conserved our wildlife nicely, has least carbon production with renewable electricity production and are already shifting toward EVs in major cities. We haven’t exploited nature the way many others have. Yet every year, we are among the victims of global warming. 💔
