Putrada means giver of a son.
This vrat also washes away sins and helps to give name, fame and wisdom.

In Dvapara-yuga there lived a king Mahijita who ruled over Mahismati-puri. He was unhappy because he had no son.

His advisors went to seek advice of Lomasa Rishi who knew part, present, and future

He told them that in his previous birth, Mahijata was a merchant. Once, when he was thirsty, he went to a pond to drink water.

A cow and calf also came for water but Mahijata shooed them away

That sin committed by him in previous birth made him suffer in this birth.

Rishi advised Mahijata to observe the Putrada Ekadashi vrat.
The king did as advised and became the father of a virtuous son.

Similarly, observing this vrat with devotion frees bhaktas from past sins.
