EC RESPONDS TO ‘INTERNAL DISSENT’ REPORT

Election Commission pushes back after The Indian Express reported that ECs Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised concerns 14 times in 10 months over decisions linked to voter rolls

EC says differences or suggestions while decisions are being drafted are part of routine institutional deliberations and do not mean the Commission is divided

It stresses that all final decisions taken by the three-member Commission over the past year, including nearly 40 initiatives and electoral reforms, were unanimous

In short: there may have been differences during deliberations, but no dissent in the final decisions

Four decades of UP elections tell a remarkable story of political consolidation and BJP’s pro-incumbency post 2014.

Once, governments in UP were routinely formed around the 25–30% vote-share zone.

MODI + Shah’s BJP has shifted the benchmark to 40%+: 39.67% in 2017 → 41.29% in 2022, despite five years of incumbency.

Continued the same in Lok Sabha elections: 42.63% (2014) → 49.98% (2019) → 41.37% (2024).

Congress’s historic collapse created the space occupied by SP and BSP. Their fortunes have since depended heavily on the consolidation and fragmentation of caste blocs and the Muslim vote.

2024 was the exception worth understanding. SP reached its highest-ever statewide vote share, 33.59%, after joining hands with Congress (9.46%), allowing INDIA collectively to edge past BJP. Yet BJP itself still retained 41.37% after ten years in power and 43.69% with collation partners.

The question for SP is what comes next? 33.59% is a stretch for SP. Its 2024 coalition maximised several existing caste/community blocs, while subsequent UP bypolls suggest that this alignment is not automatically transferable election after election.

Unless SP creates a genuinely new social coalition beyond formula-based caste arithmetic, where does the next 5–7% come from?

That is BJP’s structural advantage in UP today: a remarkably resilient ~40% base and face like YOGI. While its challengers still need coalition arithmetic to get past it.
