Back when I was in Class 7th, a classmate of mine got her periods and her white skirt got stained. It was the last class of the day and all of us girls waited for the boys to leave so we can cover her and she can go to the washroom. Even after trying her best, the stains remained and while leaving for the bus, we saw a few boys following us and giggling. We were kids back then and period was still a taboo according to us. As we walked towards the bus, we saw the driver uncle coming towards us. We weren't sure at that time if he knew or not but he scolded the boys.

He asked our friend if she is okay and then made sure that we get a seat in the middle of the bus. He offered Meftal Spas saying "Meri bhi ek bitiya hai. Main humesha ye dawa apne saath rakhta hu."

As I look back today to that day or that incident I understand how he knew that shooing away the boys was necessary. He knew that our education system couldn’t help us understand that periods are a natural thing and not a taboo. He knew that there was nothing to be ashamed of.
