Random musings in a personal capacity. Don't have all the answers, always willing to discuss, assume I'm more interested in facts than opinions. Now on BlueSky
Murder trials are complicated. They take time to prepare. The court system has been starved of resources for years, causing record backlogs.
A trial in early 2025 is remarkably swift. Most trials in the Crown Court are now being listed in 2026 or 2027.
tbh, if the ukrainian strategy is just to sucker in and destroy as many unprepared Russian units as possible, on the grounds that Russia cannot politically allow them to camp out there, then it's proving effective.
How long they plan to stay could be interesting.
if you want them to have a longer sentence then a 'just stop oil' t-shirt, bag of organic orange powder, and dropped off outside a museum / sports ground / motorway service station with their phone on a zoom call would be better, just saying.
A picture claiming to show men with “knives and swords” in Stoke during the recent riots is actually a still from a video filmed before the Southport attacks. https://t.co/Io6ywr3KA7
for all the 'genuine concerns' about immigration there are 'real consequences' for the UK as an aging population if we don't have enough key workers.
would be good to have this as the topic of discussion rather than the vaguely racist hand waving of the usual suspects
-Applications for care worker visas are down 81% on last year
-Student visa applications down 16%
-Skilled worker apps also down but only from a brief spike earlier this year
Govt must take extreme care with coms on this given context of racist anti-migrant hate #r4today
First crisis of his premiership and it's almost a repeat of what he was in charge of a decade ago (and was highly successful at), so perfect opportunity to reinforce the boringly efficient routine.
Good. The Malicious Communications Act makes it illegal to post knowingly false information that can cause distress or anxiety. Even if this woman is not convicted, I hope she will learn from what she has done.
UPDATE: Officers have arrested a man aged in his 50s at an address in South East London.
He was held on suspicion of encouraging murder and for an offence under the Public Order Act.
He is in custody at a south London police station.
Apparently he's just been arrested. less than 24 hours i think?
not seeing much evidence of two tier policing right now - police trying to get everyone off the streets who are causing or calling for trouble regardless of what "side" they represent
It was immediately obvious that the Labour councillor would be investigated & almost certainly arrested. Some of the dicks whining about ‘two-tier policing’ are too stupid/gaslit to understand this but rest assured that the grifters milking their gullibility were all sure of it.

I don't mind that Rishi Sunak is on holiday in California or that he's dining out at a Michelin starred restaurant as there are riots in the UK
What I do mind is that as the leader of the second largest party in parliament, his last Tweet was on August 4th, and he's made no efforts since to comment or speak out about the need for calm, for calling out the far right thugs - many of whom he tried to appease with his Stop The Boats rhetoric - and that seems to show a general disinterest in public order in Britain
Leadership is about being involved and engaged, in any capacity, caring, even an iota, even if you are on holiday on the other side of the world
You see this, this is what happens in real life. The bots can't show up on the streets.
On the right there (yeah the far right) are the 6 nazis who turned up to cause mayhem.
Everyone else is there to stop them.
This is England.
@jburnmurdoch it's important to distinguish between true causes, and contributing factors. Causes make things happen, the factors may influence scale and timing but not the thing happening.
the normal method is to allow self-regulation as much as possible, but when it fails and you have riots in the streets it's time to put some proper rules into play
Social media will be regulated because that's ultimately the only way to stop the bad driving out the good. And yes it means developed countries have huge bodies of rules, but nobody's found a better way right now.
i hope that tonight's planned riots turn out to be a damp squid with a few flag-wavers trying to get a response from scared locals. there's no sign of mass support, & police look prepared to catch any that got away from previous melee's. areas impacted justifiably nervous though
