Agriculture and Tourism: A Partnership for Africa’s Prosperity- ATB President
At the opening of the Intra-African Coffee and Cocoa Week, held at the Glee Hotel in Nairobi today, Hon. Cuthbert Ncube, Executive Chairman of the African Tourism Board (ATB), delivered a compelling keynote address highlighting agriculture's vital role as the backbone of Africa's economy and its profound connection to tourism.
In his speech, Hon. Ncube emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Intra-African Coffee and Cocoa Summit, calling them "great opportunities not only to celebrate our shared efforts but also to ensure that our ideas grow as abundantly as our crops." He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the event's host, recognizing their pivotal role in creating an ideal environment for meaningful dialogue and action at such a crucial moment for the continent.
Agriculture: The Foundation of Africa’s Economy
"Agriculture remains the backbone of Africa's economy, supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing significantly to GDP across the continent," Hon. Ncube remarked. He stressed the need for collective efforts to unlock the potential of the sector while fostering collaborations that transcend national borders.
Over the next two days, participants will engage in discussions on coffee and cocoa production and their links to tourism, underscoring the sector's significant impact on Africa’s economy. The African Tourism Board predicts that tourism in Africa will grow by 3.8% annually over the next decade, provided African nations unite to harness their shared potential.
Agri-Tourism: A Growing Opportunity
A key theme in Hon. Ncube’s address was the rising importance of Agri-Tourism, a sector he described as a "critical factor in Africa’s economic transformation." By promoting sustainable agricultural practices and linking them with tourism, Agri-Tourism offers dual benefits: supporting local communities and enhancing the continent’s appeal to travelers.
"Imagine visiting a farm where you can milk a cow and then savor a latte made from that very milk," Hon. Ncube said, illustrating the unique and authentic experiences Agri-Tourism can provide. Such initiatives not only enrich tourism offerings but also strengthen the connection between people and the land, fostering a deeper appreciation of Africa's natural and cultural wealth.
A Vision for the Future
Hon. Ncube urged stakeholders to embrace the true essence of Agri-Tourism, which lies in the genuine experiences it provides and the powerful connections it nurtures. "By embracing this vision, we can pave the way for a future where agriculture and tourism not only coexist but flourish together," he said, envisioning a continent where these sectors enhance livelihoods, strengthen local economies, and showcase Africa's beauty and diversity to the world.
As the summit commenced, he called on attendees to approach the discussions with enthusiasm and determination. "Let’s roll up our sleeves, pour ourselves a cup of that delicious African coffee, and embark on this journey together," he concluded, inspiring unity and purpose among the participants.
The Intra-African Coffee and Cocoa Week promises to be a transformative event, fostering innovative collaborations and celebrating Africa's agricultural and tourism potential. Under Hon. Ncube’s leadership, the African Tourism Board continues to champion initiatives that promote sustainable growth and economic resilience for the continent.
