Quantum vs crypto — the real technical picture:
Bits are 0 or 1. Qubits use superposition and entanglement, letting Shor's algorithm break the discrete-log math behind ECDSA / secp256k1.
But raw qubit count is a vanity metric. What matters is logical qubits.
Physical qubits are noisy and decohere in microseconds. Error correction bundles hundreds of them into one stable logical qubit.
Where we are (2026):
→ QuEra: 96 logical (from 448 physical)
→ Quantinuum: 48 logical (from 98)
→ Google Willow: 1 logical (from 105)
To break secp256k1: ~1,000–1,500 logical qubits. The gap is still enormous.
IBM's first fault-tolerant machine targets 2029. Cryptographically-relevant quantum is likely 2029–2035+.
