India has 166 million people over 60 and that number will double by 2050. The organised senior living sector has exactly 25,050 dwelling units. That is 1.5% penetration. In the US it is 6-7%. In New Zealand it is 14-15%.
The ASLI-JLL report says this can become a $10.1 billion opportunity by 2030. But the number that stopped me was about assisted living beds. We have 2,100 today. The projected need by 2030 is 11,000. The 75-plus population is growing at 7.8% a year.
So the math is simple. Demand is exploding. Supply is nowhere close. And the constraint is skilled caregivers.
What I keep thinking is this. Most of us plan our retirement around a corpus and a withdrawal rate. We do not plan for who will take care of us when we cannot take care of ourselves. This is the part of the demographic story nobody wants to stare at. The market will figure it out eventually. But for the people turning 75 in 2030, eventually is not soon enough.
🧵India is obsessed with the "Youth Bulge," but the real investment alpha might be at the other end of the age scale.
Max India is cornering a market that is mathematically guaranteed to explode: The Silver Economy. 👇
