Besides war glory, this war also defined the 'Idea of India' against the 'Communal Pak'.

Shastriji was a bit angry that day with a BBC report. It was the day after the ceasefire. Addressing a public meeting in Ram Leela Maidan he first took the issue expressing his displeasure.

But what was in that report that made a humble person like Shastriji so dejected?

The BBC report claimed that "Since India' s Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri is a Hindu, he is ready for war with Pakistan".
So - Shastriji ko Gussa aa gaya. 🤨

Addressing the foreign media he said
listen "while I am a Hindu, Mir Mustaq who is presiding over this meeting is a Muslim. Mr Frank Anthony who addresssed you is a Christian. There are also Sikhs and Parsis here.

The unique thing about our country is that we have Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis & people of all other religions.

We have Temples and mosques, Gurdwaras and Churches. But we do not bring this into politics........ This is the difference between India and Pakistan. Where as Pakistan proclaims herself to be an Islamic state and uses religion as political factor, we Indians have the freedom to follow whatever religion we choose [and] worship in any way we please.

So far as politics is concerned each of us is as much an Indian as the other".

However unlike agnostic Pt. Nehru Shastriji was a practicing Hindu, very religious. But after becoming PM when he was asked by an interviewer to speak about his faith in the '𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑾𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒍𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂' 18th October, 1964 he answered
"One should not discuss one's religion in public". 🙂

This was the man Lal Bahadur Shastri unlike an OBC politician today who in chair acts like the household Brahmin priest.

Nonetheless Shastriji's speech in Ram Leela Maidan was not any flattery. Let me produce a short highlight from the uncountable incidents in that 1965 War that represented the United people of India like never before post Independence.

At the time when the Pakistani communal state used religious idiom of brotherhood with Kashmiri Muslims, war on behalf of them the Kashmiris unitedly detested their approach. The local Kashmiri population was apathetic towards them. Some intruders were caught by them and handed over to the police.

Many Kashmiris stood with the Army against fight with intruders.

As the communal Pak force chanted slogan 'Has ke liya hai Pakistan
Ladh ke lenge Hindustan'.
All across India Muslim writers, columnists, intellectuals publushed writings addressing Ayub Khan rejecting the communal Pak absolutely with harsh words sometimes abuses.

Across India there was no communal incident. In the South the linguistic protest against Hindi was paused.

What more, ironically another Ayub Khan who was in Indian Army from Rajasthan knocked out a couple of Pakistani Tanks. As Naib Risaldar, he was honoured with the Vir Chakra for his gallantry in the Sialkot sector.

Finally How can I miss Abdul Hamid, son of a Tailor from Uttar Pradesh who with with his RCL gun did no less than a miracle? On 10 Sept when in his battalion only four Granadiers left, in open jeep, vulnerable to the shelling he destroyed four Pak advanced Tanks.

Before facing the Last Tank he ordered his men to take cover. When the Tank spotted his jeep being alone he couldn't change his position and fired at the Tank and vice versa. He died on spot.

This martyred soldier, Abdul Hamid, the Pride of Uttar Pradesh won India's highest Military Honour Param Vir Chakra.

*IDEA OF INDIA

This was Lal Bahadur Shastri's India. Repeat there was not a single communal incident during this War as it was 'Jai Jawan Jai Kissan' India, United India where a soldier is a farmer in 'Uniform'.

It was not Today's COMMUNAL INDIA. 🙏🏾

Totally shaken by the SC ordered Electoral bonds expose, Modi has lost the plot & is desperately flailing around. Having got used to ‘Modi’s wish is the law’; the tough order of SC, quashing the bonds & ordering release of Bond data (which shows BJP taking bribes of 1000s of Crs), unsettled him enough to tweet in support of a pathetic letter by BJP lawyers seeking to pressure CJI to back off from tough orders.
