Twelve years ago, around 150 rail accidents occurred in a year. Today, that number has reduced to just 15 to 20, and we are working to minimise it further.

Tomorrow as we celebrate India's Independence Day, it is worth remembering who really stood for our Independence.

B. R. Ambedkar was not a part of India’s freedom struggle ever. Worse, he openly distanced the Scheduled Classes from the demand for independence and repeatedly argued that they were not seeking an “immediate transfer of power” from the British to Indians.

Think about that language: while millions were fighting to end British rule, the issue was reduced to a question of whether political power should be “transferred” by the British.
Ambedkar even described the freedom struggle as a “dishonest agitation” and argued that Swaraj would simply hand power to the so-called governing classes.

He attacked Congress, warned the British that independence would lead to “Hindu Raj,” and went as far as arguing that the British system offered a better form of Govt.

And the British themselves appreciated his usefulness. Their officials openly praised his opposition to Congress, described him as someone who supported British influence in India, and called his interventions against Congress “most effective.”

So enough of the sanitised history. A man can be some towering constitutional figure and still have a deeply problematic record on India’s freedom struggle.

Reverence does not require historical amnesia.

- He never participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement.

- He never participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement.

- He never participated in the Quit India Movement.

- He never directly criticized the British.

- He opposed the Quit India Movement.

- He supported the Simon Commission, the same commission whose arrival led to the lathi charge on Lala Lajpat Rai and was followed by the political developments that eventually led to the execution of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru.

- In 1940, he held a meeting in Bombay with Periyar and Jinnah because of his differences with the Congress.
