This time, five years ago, when the world was battling a pandemic, I was busy analyzing 837 research papers, towards my PhD.
During my PhD, I cried countless times. The journey was tough and painful. It’s the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Every market day, I was always ready to quit.
My PhD will forever be a bragging right. I achieved it with “sweat, blood and tears”.
From a Governance of Digitalization standpoint, this situation is actually very predictable and honestly, preventable.
When you create a form that collects BVN, NIN, phone numbers, and other sensitive details, and then thousands of people start submitting it at once, Google will automatically flag it. Not because anyone reported you, but because their system is built to protect users from scams and data misuse.
And this is where the real issue lies:
Even with the best intentions, once you start collecting that kind of personal data, you step into a territory that requires serious structure; data protection, security frameworks, privacy notices, proper storage, all of it. You can’t use Google Forms for something this big and this sensitive. It simply isn’t built for that.
A project touching 10,000 people needs to be set up like one. That means:
• A secure platform
• Clear privacy policies
• Only collecting data you absolutely need
• A plan for how people’s information will be stored, used, and protected
• Someone who understands NDPR and digital safety guiding the process
Create a more solid foundation for your idea so that the risk doesn't outweigh your mission.
