In the late 1960s, researcher John B. Calhoun created “Universe 25” — a mouse population given abundant food, water, shelter, and protection. At first, the population exploded. Then social behavior began to break down. Mating declined, isolation increased, and eventually the colony stopped reproducing and died out. It doesn’t prove that humans will follow the same path, but it raises a powerful question as birth rates decline across much of the world: What happens to a society when comfort increases, but connection, purpose, family, and community begin to disappear?
