Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has announced plans to lead a mass protest against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the controversial allocation of Jabi Lake land in Abuja.
Sowore said the planned demonstration will also draw attention to broader concerns around governance, public asset management, and accountability within the Federal Capital Territory administration.
The protest is part of a wider civic push to challenge what he described as misuse of public resources and lack of transparency in key government decisions.

How the Middle East Crisis Impacts Nigeria's Shipping Industry
The ongoing Middle East crisis is significantly impacting Nigeria's shipping industry, with far-reaching consequences for the country's economy.
The conflict has led to the suspension of shipping services through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, forcing vessels to take longer routes around Africa, which increases fuel costs and operational expenses.
Major shipping lines like Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Maersk, and CMA CGM have suspended bookings for cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz or destined for Persian Gulf ports. This disruption has resulted in higher shipping costs, with some estimates suggesting a 40% surge in global freight rates and a 400% increase in marine war-risk insurance for high-risk corridors.
The impact on Nigeria is substantial, with increased costs for imports and exports, potentially leading to product shortages and higher inflation. The country's oil exports, which account for over 85% of export earnings, may also be affected by the conflict, as global oil prices fluctuate.
Key Effects on Nigeria's Shipping Industry:
- Increased Shipping Costs: Higher fuel costs, operational expenses, and war-risk insurance premiums
- Delays and Disruptions: Longer shipping routes and potential cargo holdups
- Inflationary Pressures: Rising costs of imports and exports contributing to inflation
- Oil Export Impacts: Fluctuating global oil prices affecting Nigeria's revenue

Jordan said it intercepted ballistic missiles, and Ukraine blamed Tehran’s actions for the crisis. France prioritised the safety of its citizens, while the African Union warned the strikes could worsen global instability.

APC Backs Wike’s Freedom to Support Any Candidate
The All Progressives Congress has defended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saying he has every constitutional right to campaign for candidates across party lines. APC spokesman Felix Morka made the remarks while addressing concerns over Wike’s visible support for APC candidates in the February 21 FCT elections—support that helped the party secure five of six area councils.
Tensions rose after two Peoples Democratic Party chairmanship candidates stepped down to back the APC, sparking backlash from the PDP leadership. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reduced its benchmark interest rate to 26.5%, the second rate cut under the current leadership of Governor Olayemi Cardoso.
The decision was announced at the end of the 304th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. Cardoso said the committee “decided to reduce the monetary policy rate by 50 basis points to 26.5%.”
This follows a previous 50-basis-point cut in September 2025 and a hold in November 2025. The move comes as Nigeria’s headline inflation eased to 15.10% in January 2026, providing room for the MPC to ease monetary policy.
