@Amon_RA Yeah, from all the scattered information, it seems Jim said the repairs were good enough for production so I'm assuming Commodore took his advice. However, he didn't want to use it for his own product, which I understand since his audience actually scrutinizes these keycaps.
๐ค Commodore's email doesn't fully match Jim's story.
Jim: gold test done "without my knowledge" + he paid for new molds Commodore: factory's mistake + factory covering repairs
๐คท Both could be true. Or there's some finger-pointing.
Commodore is ditching gold fleck keycaps entirely. Switching to PVD electroplated finish from a new manufacturer.
So Founders Edition won't use Jim's molds at all. Whole different direction.
The molds aren't completely ruined though. Just jagged edges at the injection ports. Jim says you won't see it once the keyboard is in the case, and they're trimming to minimize it. Regular editions and backer keycaps should be fine. Little mistakes will make good collectors items anyway ๐
@Amon_RA@CoolUserName371@CasualGameGeek@commodoreofcl Ok, so Jim Brew is behind CBMSTUFF and he is one of launch partners of the C64 Ultimate. So shouldn't be the complaints towards his company instead. Maybe he gave priority to the C64U or the C64U team has a faster or more efficient production line setup.
Just got an email from @commodoreofcl about my C64 Ultimate Founders Edition being delayed... and I'm actually MORE excited now.
The keyboard factory mistake? Led to a full upgrade to gold PVD electroplated keys instead of gold fleck plastic.
This is collector gold 101: The pieces with the wildest backstories and unexpected upgrades become the most coveted. First run? Cool. First run that got *better* because of a manufacturing drama? That's legendary.
Manufacturing "mistakes" that result in improvements are what separate good collectibles from grail-tier ones.
December can't come fast enough. ๐โจ
