🚨 Ian Wright on Arsenal agreeing to retake their official team photograph to include William Saliba:
“I saw the news and started laughing, because only Arsenal fans could turn a team photograph into something requiring urgent attention from the club.
But I understood it.
People outside Arsenal will say, ‘It’s just a photograph. Take another one next year.’
They don’t understand what William Saliba means to these supporters.
I was speaking to an older Arsenal fan recently. He was telling me everything that worries him when Arsenal play. The finishing, the midfield, the substitutions.
So I asked, ‘What about Saliba?’
He looked at me and said, ‘Wrighty, when that boy is playing, I don’t even think about the defence.’
And I thought, there it is. That’s probably the biggest compliment you can give a centre-back.
Because when supporters are nervous, they notice everything. Every striker making a run, every ball over the top.
But with Saliba, a striker starts running towards him and you almost expect him to deal with it. Most of the time, he does.
No dramatic sliding tackle, no clearance into the stands. He gets into position, takes the ball and gives it to somebody in midfield.
Sometimes you only realise how difficult it was when you watch it again.
And that’s why the photograph matters.
This isn’t somebody passing through Arsenal. Supporters remember waiting for him to get his opportunity, watching him become one of the most important players in the team.
They remember the games he missed, too. Those were the games that showed them just how much they depended on him.
Somebody once told me, ‘Wrighty, you know Saliba’s having a good game when you forget he’s playing.’
That’s absolutely right.
And then Arsenal release the team photograph and he’s not there!
Of course they’re going to complain.
You’ve got supporters zooming in, counting heads, checking the back row, looking behind the goalkeeper. Somebody probably thought he was hiding behind Gabriel.
Then they realise he’s genuinely missing.
I can imagine someone at the club saying, ‘We’ve already arranged the photograph. We can’t do it again.’
And the supporters replying, ‘Well, arrange it again, then.’
The club explained there were commercial commitments and the photograph had already been postponed. Fair enough. These things happen.
But the supporters wanted their number two in that picture.
And there’s something special about that. Footballers spend their careers trying to earn that kind of affection.
You can sing a player’s song and applaud him after a good performance. But when thousands of supporters look at a photograph of their entire team and immediately notice one defender is missing, that tells you how much he means to them.
William might not even have made a fuss. He’s so calm, I can imagine him saying, ‘It’s okay, we can take another one.’
But the fans weren’t having it.
And now they’re taking another photograph.
I hope somebody tells him why.
Because it’s not really about standing in the back row wearing an Arsenal shirt.
It’s about Arsenal supporters looking at a picture of their team, seeing everybody else there, and still feeling that something important was missing.
That’s how much they value him.
And when they retake it, they’d better make sure Gabriel is standing next to him.
Because I don’t think any of us have the energy for another investigation.”
🚨🇫🇷 Thierry Henry on Viktor Gyökeres after scoring against Romania:
🗣️“Gyökeres has scored in seven consecutive Nations League games. Nobody has done that before. Before questioning the striker, ask why he scores freely for Sweden but struggles regularly for Arsenal.
Last season he scored 21 goals in all competitions and helped Arsenal win the Premier League. The quality and goals have not disappeared. He has not suddenly changed.
A striker needs service. You cannot ask your number nine to create chances, make runs, beat defenders and finish alone. Sweden find him, play to his strengths and give him chances; he scores.
Arsenal must look at themselves. The attackers must create more, and Arteta must use Gyökeres properly. Do not make a striker like this the problem; build around his strengths.
Give him chances, then judge him. If Arsenal create more, he will score. He is a goal machine. We have already seen it.”
🚨💣 BREAKING: Sir Alex Ferguson speaks on Manchester City guilty of 114 of their 115 Premier League FFP charges:
🗣️Sir Alex:
“I called them the noisy neighbours, didn’t I? There was always something about the way it was all being built that didn’t sit right with me. Now we’re hearing 114 guilty findings out of 115 charges. If those findings stand, that’s an embarrassment for English football and for the Premier League.”
“When the Abu Dhabi takeover happened in 2008, my concern was what that amount of money, without proper scrutiny, could do to the competition. Investment is one thing. Allowing a club to believe it’s above the rules is another. The authorities have a responsibility to make sure ambition never becomes an excuse for corruption.”
“If City cheated their way to the top, they must face the consequences. Proper consequences. You cannot let a club benefit from breaking the rules and then treat the punishment as another expense it can comfortably afford. That makes a mockery of every club trying to compete honestly.”
“I’ve spent my life in football. I’ve seen what this game means to people. Supporters work all week and spend their money believing they’re watching a fair contest. They deserve that honesty. We cannot allow corruption to ruin the beautiful game. No amount of money, no collection of trophies, puts Manchester City or anybody else above it….”
🚨🇫🇷 Thierry Henry on Manchester City being found guilty of 114 charges:
🗣️“I have to be honest. If Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 charges, I don’t understand how a points deduction can be enough.
If those breaches gave them an advantage, the titles won in that period have to be questioned.
For me, the Premier League titles should be stripped. The trophies should be taken away, the records corrected, and the punishment should go beyond points.
Relegation should also be considered.
This is not just about Manchester City. It is about the integrity of the competition.
If you break the rules on that scale and are found guilty, you cannot keep everything you achieved and move on after a points deduction.
Take the titles. Take the trophies. Let the records reflect what happened.
Otherwise, what message are we sending to every other club?”
