Mississippi Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson, the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, is boycotting this Tuesday's State of the Union address. He says he only attended one of Trump's State of the Union addresses during the Trump years. He attended that speech only to prevent Republicans from shaking the president’s hand. This #BHM we celebrate civil rights and women’s suffrage leader Ida B. Wells. As a fearless investigative journalist, her nationwide anti-lynching campaign saved countless lives from white supremacist violence.

Wells was an essential figure in the early civil rights movement, whose life of dedicated activism included co-founding the NAACP, owning and editing newspapers that advocated for equal rights, and founding Chicago’s first kindergarten for Black children.

We honor her memory as we continue to fight against violence, racism, and patriarchy.
