এ কোন সুরাবর্দি ? সুমন দে গতকাল থেকে সোশ্যাল মিডিয়া খুললেই সুরাবর্দিকে নিয়ে যে তরজাটা চলছে , সেটা অত্যন্ত বিরক্তিকর। কারণ তাতে আবেগ আছে, অন্ধত্ব আছে, কিন্তু নেই যেটা, সেটা হচ্ছে তথ্য এবং যুক্তি। প্রথমেই বলে রাখি যে আমি ইতিহাসবিদ নই, কিন্তু হোয়াটসঅ্যাপ ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্রও যে নই! তাই চোখের সামনে এতগুলো ভুল তথ্য এতদিক থেকে এতবার বলা হচ্ছে যে চুপ করে থাকা বেশ মুশকিল হলো । ছোটবেলায় ইতিহাসের শিক্ষক শ্রদ্ধেয় কৃষ্ণাশিস গোস্বামী শিখিয়েছিলেন, ইতিহাসকে সব সময় দেখতে হয় নির্মোহ দৃষ্টিতে। কিন্তু মোহ বা মোহমুক্তি তো পরের কথা,আগে তো তথ্যটা ঠিক করতে হবে। আর এখানেই গোড়ায় গলদ বেঁধে বসে আছে ! সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউর নাম তো বদল হবে, সে হোক, কিন্তু ভদ্রলোক ছিলেন কে? চিরকালই দেখেছি, বেশিরভাগ বাঙালি ভ্রমবশত মনে করে এসেছে, এই সুরাবর্দি হচ্ছেন Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy , যার দু‘হাতে সংশয়াতীতভাবে ১৯৪৬-এর দাঙ্গার রক্ত লেগে আছে, যে পরিকল্পিত মারণযজ্ঞে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ব্যবস্থাপক সভার তৎকালীন বিরোধী সদস্য জ্যোতি বসুর হিসেবে অনুযায়ী, অন্তত কুড়ি হাজার মানুষের মৃত্যু হয়েছিল! গতকাল রাস্তার নাম পরিবর্তনের খবর সামনে আসার পর বাজারে নামলেন আরেক দল বিশেষজ্ঞ যারা ‘ভাইপো‘-কে ছেড়ে কাকা-কে সামনে আনলেন। আর কে না জানে এই ক্যা-ক্যা-ছি-ছি-র রাজ্যে ভাইপো সম্পর্কিত কোনো কিছু, যে কোনও কিছুই একেবারে হট কেক! Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy-র কাকা Hassan Suhrawardy ছিলেন শ্যামাপ্রসাদ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের আগের কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য, যাঁর মেয়াদকাল ছিল ১৯৩০ সালের ৮ই আগস্ট থেকে ১৯৩৪ সালের ৭ই আগস্ট পর্যন্ত। দুঃখের বিষয় হলো, এই কাকা-ভাইপো কারও নামেই সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ-এর নামকরণ করা হয়নি। আমাদের দেশে বা রাজ্যে সাধারণত জীবিত মানুষের জীবদ্দশায় তাঁর নামে রাস্তার নামকরণ হয় না । এক্ষেত্রেও হয়নি । কারণ ১৯৩৩ সালে যখন পার্ক সার্কাসের পঞ্চম রাস্তাটির সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ নামকরণের প্রস্তাব আসে, তখন Hassan Suhrawardy শুধু জীবিত ছিলেন তাই নয়, কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্যের চেয়ারেও আসীন। আসলে এই রাস্তাটির নামকরণ হয় Hassan Suhrawardy-র বাবা Moulana Obaidullah Suhrawardy-র নামে। কলকাতা পুরসভার ৮ই মার্চ ১৯৩৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দের অধিবেশনে নবনির্মিত এই রাস্তাটির নাম সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ রাখার এক প্রস্তাব আনেন সে সময়ের দাপুটে কাউন্সিলার এক ব্রাহ্মণসন্তান । তাঁর নাম শৈলেন্দ্রনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায়। শৈলেন্দ্রনাথবাবুর সেই প্রস্তাবে বলা হয়েছিল - "That the new 100 feet Road constructed by the C.I.T. from Park Circus to the junction with Kasaipara Lane lying to the North of the park be called 'Suhrawardy Avenue'. He said that this should be in compliance with the unanimous desire of the local public and in recognition of the vast scholarship and erudition, deep piety and saintly character of the illustrious Moulana Obaidullah Suhrawardy." আজকের এই উত্তপ্ত ও অগ্নিবর্ষী বিতর্কের মাঝে দাঁড়িয়ে মনে হচ্ছিল ভাগ্যিস অজিতকুমার বসু তাঁর দু‘খণ্ডের ‘কলিকাতার রাজপথ‘বইতে বিস্তারিতভাবে সেই প্রস্তাব সম্পর্কে লিখে গেছেন । অজিতবাবু লিখছেন, "১০০ ফুট চওড়া, পার্ক সার্কাস থেকে শুরু হয়ে কসাইপাড়া লেনের এবং পার্ক সার্কাস উদ্যানের উত্তরে এসে পড়েছে। পরে রাস্তাটি দরগা রোড পর্যন্ত প্রসারিত হয়েছিল। কলিকাতা পুরসভা ওই দিন (8.3.1933.) ওই প্রস্তাব অনুমোদন করেন। নতুন রাস্তা ‘সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ’ নামে নামাঙ্কিত হয়। মৌলানা সুরাবর্দি ছিলেন সাধু প্রকৃতির, জাতি ধর্ম-নির্বিশেষে সকলেই তাঁকে শ্রদ্ধা ভক্তি করত। তাঁর পুত্রেরা সকলেই কৃতবিদ্য ছিলেন। তাঁরা হলেন স্যার আবদুল্লা সুরাবর্দি, স্যার হাসান সুরাবর্দি এবং মিস্টার মাসুম সুরাবর্দি।” ব্যাস, ইতিহাসের ঝাঁপি এখানেই শেষ। বাকি রইল বিদ্বেষ আর বিষোদগার । ভেবে নিন কোন পথে যাবেন - ওই নির্মোহ ইতিহাসের অসমান পথ, নাকি হোয়াটসঅ্যাপ ইউনিভার্সিটির রাজপথ?

Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy-র কাকা Hassan Suhrawardy ছিলেন শ্যামাপ্রসাদ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের আগের কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য, যাঁর মেয়াদকাল ছিল ১৯৩০ সালের ৮ই আগস্ট থেকে ১৯৩৪ সালের ৭ই আগস্ট পর্যন্ত।

দুঃখের বিষয় হলো, এই কাকা-ভাইপো কারও নামেই সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ-এর নামকরণ করা হয়নি। আমাদের দেশে বা রাজ্যে সাধারণত জীবিত মানুষের জীবদ্দশায় তাঁর নামে রাস্তার নামকরণ হয় না । এক্ষেত্রেও হয়নি । কারণ ১৯৩৩ সালে যখন পার্ক সার্কাসের পঞ্চম রাস্তাটির সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ নামকরণের প্রস্তাব আসে, তখন Hassan Suhrawardy শুধু জীবিত ছিলেন তাই নয়, কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্যের চেয়ারেও আসীন। আসলে এই রাস্তাটির নামকরণ হয় Hassan Suhrawardy-র বাবা Moulana Obaidullah Suhrawardy-র নামে। কলকাতা পুরসভার ৮ই মার্চ ১৯৩৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দের অধিবেশনে নবনির্মিত এই রাস্তাটির নাম সুরাবর্দি অ্যাভিনিউ রাখার এক প্রস্তাব আনেন সে সময়ের দাপুটে কাউন্সিলার এক ব্রাহ্মণসন্তান । তাঁর নাম শৈলেন্দ্রনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায়।

Deeply devastated by the tragic news from the Gulf of Oman. Three innocent Indian civilian seafarers — Patnala Suresh, Shivanand Chaurasiya, and Aditya Sharma — have lost their lives following a targeted US precision military strike on the commercial oil tanker, M/T Settebello. These men were not combatants. They were civilian mariners doing their jobs, caught in the crossfire of a geopolitical standoff. I strongly support the Government of India's swift and firm response in calling out this unacceptable overreach. By summoning the US Chargé d'Affaires to lodge a strong protest and forcefully raising the matter at the United Nations, New Delhi has made it clear that Indian lives are not acceptable “collateral damage”. While the US enforces its maritime blockade, it must cease and desist from targeting commercial civilian infrastructure and crews. A military strike on an engine room, knowing civilians are on board, is unjustifiable. Global maritime forces have plenty of non-lethal methods to intercept, redirect, or board non-compliant vessels. Resorting to missile strikes that kill civilian crews must stop immediately. Freedom of navigation must apply to the safety of the sailors who power global trade. I hope india firmly demands this of its US interlocutors since practically every ship in those waters carries Indian crew. Our deepest prayers are with the bereaved families. We stand with you. 🕉️ शांति!
