Who is Nandan Nilekani?

Nandan Nilekani is one of India’s most respected technology leaders and the Co founder and Chairman of Infosys. He previously served as the founding Chairman of UIDAI, where he led the creation and rollout of Aadhaar, the world’s largest digital identity system. He has also played a major role in shaping India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, including digital identity, e KYC and other large scale public technology initiatives.

His biggest achievements include building Infosys into a global IT giant, leading the Aadhaar project covering over a billion Indians, and helping create secure digital systems used by millions every day.

He has now been appointed to lead the Government’s High Powered Task Force on examination reforms. The likely reason is his proven experience in designing secure, scalable and transparent technology systems. The government is expected to rely on his expertise to recommend reforms that can strengthen exam security, improve candidate authentication, reduce malpractice, enhance cybersecurity and restore trust in India’s examination system.

Bengaluru-based #GalaxEye has successfully launched Mission Drishti today, world’s first OptoSAR satellite & India's largest privately built satellite.

India has now attained criticality in a commercial, 500MW power producing, fast breeder nuclear reactor.

(We had experimental one before, but this is a big commercial one that can produce power.)

Criticality means reactor is running by itself without needing to keep re-igniting it. Breeder means it makes more fissile fuel than it uses.

Nobody wanted to give India such tech. Because these reactors can create nuclear fissile material. So India created the tech itself in spite of sanctions.

Only Russia has this tech (true commerical fast breeder reactor) running. US, UK, France say they have given up on this. China has one prototype based on Russian tech but it is not yet commercial.

India has refused to put its Fast Breeder Reactor program under international scrutiny. It is a big, big, no HUGE thing for India's energy independence.

But, as usual, most Indians won't know how big as we don't play up our achievements. I was recently amused seeing some posts by Gen-Z advising Indian govt to go for Thorium cycle etc in some condescending tone.

Because India has been on it quietly for sometime. And this reactor going critical now and commercial soon means it can sustain itself for infinity. This cuts India's imports of Uranium. And paves the way for Thorium based reactors as well. (Stage 3 of India's nuclear program, we just passed Stage 2 with PM's post).

Also, what PM didn't say is, this reactor can help generate some 100+kg of weapons grade Plutonium -with which India can make many warheads and expand nuclear stockpile if it wishes so.

But India will never do that, you know, as India is a very peaceful nation promoting world wide nuclear disarmament ;)

Deepawali is the largest, and perhaps the only, pan-India festival that truly brings people back home, as those away from family make their way to native towns.

It deserves a full week of national holidays. If needed, revoke holidays like Gandhi Jayanti and few more, that don’t resonate with the masses and give Deepawali the recognition it deserves.

Other countries set a precedent too, with long holidays for festivals like Chinese New Year, Christmas in West, and Japan’s Golden Week.

My car broke down today, so I booked an auto home. It was a brand-new electric one. The driver, Vivek Singh, looked to be in his forties: quiet, focused, the kind of man who keeps to himself.

At a busy red light, a delivery boy pulled up beside us and, eyeing the auto, asked, “Ek charge mein kitna chal jaata hai?”

Vivek started replying in excitement, as if he’d been waiting for that question. “Company 210 bolti hai, lekin 190 hai. Ek charge me poora din nikal jaata hai, chalate jao, chalate jao. 20–25 ride ho jaati hain, charge khatam hi nahi hota.” The delivery boy asked about earnings. He shrugged: “Din ka 3–3.5 hazaar ho jaata hai. Koi ghate ka sauda nahi.”

Signal green. We moved ahead. But the delivery boy was still interested. He started driving next to us and asked, “Kitne me pada?” Vivek said, “Interest mila kar 6 lakh. 13–13 hazar ki 44 kisht hai. 70–80 mahina mai kama leta hu, usme se kisht aaram se nikal jaati hai. Kyu kisi ke yaha 15–20 ki naukri karna?”

The delivery boy laughed and rode off, but now I was curious. I asked, 20–25 ride matlab poora din hi bahar rehte honge. “Subah 8 nikalta hu, raat 10-11 wapas,” he said.

I said, fir aapki life kya rahi. He replied, “Agar kul ko gareebi se bahar nikalna hai to kisi ek peedhi ko apna sukh chhod kar ji-jan se mehnat karni padegi. Ek baar ghar ban jaaye, bachhe kuch ban jaayein, fir jiyenge apni zindagi.” He said that with the same excitement, without any complaint, no gareebi, majboori ka rona.

He dropped me at my stop. I watched him merge into traffic, a quiet man doing what’s expected from a man: providing. While mothers get due love, care, affection, and respect for what they sacrifice for the family, and rightly so, fathers’ sacrifice is generally downplayed as basic duty.

I hope his children grow up to make all this worth it for him. That, at least, is the bare minimum he deserves.
