General Sani Abacha ruled Nigeria at a time when oil producers were building their countries after the gulf war boom. Whilst Dubai, Qatar etc were being built from oil money into the finest cities in the world, Nigerians were cooking from saw dust stove & getting massacred. Whilst we can argue that Abacha was sanctioned, history shows that some countries turned around their societies during sanctions because it creates opportunities to focus on the local economy. The Abacha family had a chance to become the Al Maktoum family of Nigeria, but chose to steal the country blind.

This faux good performance indices can be likened to 10 kids who were given $100 each, while other kids used theirs to build their villages into cities & multiplied wealth, Abacha stole $95, then left $5 for his village after killing many of them. Then 25 years later, children from his village with little sense of history celebrate him for leaving them $5. A complete travesty of a ruler and kleptomaniac dictator!
