neuroscience fact: your brain can't install new habits while you're shaming yourself through the old ones. cortisol blocks learning. compassion opens it. you can't bully a brain into growth.
Underrated life advice: Do uncomfortable things early. The conversation gets harder. The debt gets bigger. The mistake gets harder to fix. Deal with things while they're still small. Slay the dragon in its lair before it comes to your village.
no matter how much potential you have, if you don’t lock in fully and take charge of your life, you are going to eventually end up as the guy who had potential without having anything to show for it
stop trying to kill your demons. give them a job.
* take the anger to the gym
* turn obsession into building something
* clean when your mind feels chaotic
* make art out of heartbreak
* let regret make you kinder
* use jealousy to figure out what you actually want
* turn resentment into boundaries
* let anxiety push you to prepare, not panic
* use your need for control to build better routines
* pour loneliness into learning how to enjoy your own company
the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it’s called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don’t care, but because you care too much.
one thing i've been thinking about lately is how much your brain learns from repetition.
you can spend months telling yourself you're not good at something and after a while you stop even trying. not because you've actually proven that you can't do it, but because your brain has gotten used to the idea that “this isn't for me.”
then you start doing the opposite, you study even when you don't feel like it. you speak up when you'd normally stay quiet. you force yourself to finish things instead of abandoning them halfway. after a while, those things start feeling normal too.
and that's what i find crazy about the brain, it doesn't just remember what you do. it starts adapting to the person you're repeatedly being.
there's still so much about the brain i don't understand, but the more i learn about it, the more i realize how much of our daily behavior is being shaped by things we don't even notice and i will always share.
You can only live one life. Reading is the workaround. Every book is someone else's decades, handed over in a few hours. They spent 30+ years working something out and you get it in a weekend. Then you keep it.
Don't run away from what you can do...
"If you deliberately plan to be less than you are capable of being, I warn you that you'll be deeply unhappy for the rest of your life." - Maslow
Try like your life depends on it.
There are incredible possibilities just waiting for you.
The best way to kill fear is to bore it to death.
Fear only works on the unfamiliar by flagging new things as threats. Repetition is the solution. If you do the thing so many times it becomes ordinary, fear has nothing to work with since there's nothing to warn you about anymore.
The first time is horrible. The tenth is still uncomfortable but by the hundredth you don't even notice.
You seriously underestimate how much you can do with time. 1 year is a fucking lifetime. 6 months is enough to go from 0 to 100. Even 1 week of full commitment 14 hours a day is enough to push the needle so far forward you won't even recognize yourself. Just do more. Just do what your heart desires. Just be better.
