The National Service Authority (NSA) Board has suspended the GH¢15 monthly deduction by the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) with immediate effect.

The deduction, which was intended to support NASPA activities and provide welfare-related services for national service personnel, including an insurance package for personnel in cases of accidents, disability, or death during their service period, has been halted following concerns raised over the collection process and its approval.

Please take a look at this.

Your Excellency, you will attest to the fact that the allowances received by personnel are barely enough to survive on. For many who are posted outside their home regions, these allowances are scarcely sufficient to cover rent, utilities, transportation, and other basic living expenses. Many are struggling and are forced to rely on family and loved ones just to make ends meet. Their plight deserves empathy—not additional schemes that further reduce their already meagre allowances.

For years, portions of personnel allowances were deducted to provide a two-yard piece of cloth that many never received. To date, there has been no accountability regarding what those deductions were used for. The cloth was never distributed, and the money was never refunded. I respectfully urge you to have this matter investigated. I believe the findings will reveal the scale of the funds involved.

Now there are reports of yet another deduction, this time for "capacity building." This raises an important question: Can personnel ever receive their full allowances without new reasons being introduced to deduct portions of these already inadequate funds?

Sir, it is time for accountability. Please initiate a thorough audit of all deductions made from personnel allowances under both past and current administrations. Every pesewa deducted should be accounted for. Where funds were improperly deducted or misused, those responsible should be required to refund the money and be held accountable under the law. Only then can confidence be restored and this cycle brought to an end.
