The SC/ST Atrocities Act, by its very design, encourages misuse rather than genuine grievance redressal.

1. In a country where people kill each other over few hundred rupees, offering 1,00,000 rupees simply for filing a case under this Act, for offenses as minor as verbal abuse, creates a obvious perverse incentive. Up to 50% of this amount is disbursed upon the filing of the FIR alone, requiring no prior investigation. Another 25% is paid when the chargesheet is filed. The best part is, if the case is later proven false, the compensation is not automatically recovered. How could this setup not encourage misuse?

2. There is no requirement for a preliminary inquiry. Someone makes a complaint, and you are arrested, that's it. With anticipatory bail explicitly barred, you are left entirely at the mercy of the legal system. Depending on your financial resources, getting bail can take anywhere from a few days to many years; a man in UP spent 20 years in jail before being acquitted of false charges. While defenders of the law argue that the innocent will eventually be freed, the process itself becomes the punishment. Why should innocent individuals endure humiliation and severe mental, physical, financial, and social hardship in the name of skewed social justice?

3. There are virtually no consequences for deliberate false accusations. A complainant can fabricate allegations, land an innocent person in prison, collect govt compensation, be exposed as a liar in court, and still face zero accountability. Instead, they can simply play the victim, claiming that the justice system fails the marginalized.

This framework has spawned a lucrative extortion ecosystem. Syndicates exploit the threat of non-bailable arrest to blackmail citizens, business owners, and public officials. When unverified cash payouts, absolute immunity, and guaranteed incarceration align, a law designed to shield the vulnerable inevitably becomes a tool for institutionalized extortion.

Dear BJP,

These were your unconditional foot soldiers, the bedrock of your movement. For decades, they carried the flag of Hindutva and stood firmly behind you at the ballot box, asking for little in return except the protection and dignity of the civilization.

They made conscious compromises with reservations and the harsh realities of the Atrocities Act, suppressing their own grievances for what they believed was a grander purpose: the consolidation and unification of Hindu society. But instead of delivering that unity, you fell into the comfortable rut of identity-driven social engineering and competitive appeasement.

The crowd on the streets may number in the thousands, but the resentment is shared by millions. Do not mistake loyalty for subservience, and do not treat your most reliable supporters like disposable political collateral. Listen to them, address their grievances, and afford them the equal dignity they deserve before their alienation becomes permanent.

In Odisha, 95% of the population belongs to a reserved category.

SC: 17%. ST: 23%. SEBC/OBC: ~55%.

The remaining 5%? Brahmins and Karanas. That's it. That is the entire "general category" in Odisha.

Now here is the part nobody talks about.

The Khandayats, traditional Kshatriyas of Odisha, descendants of the great warriors who built the Gajapati Empire, one of the most powerful medieval kingdoms in India, are classified as SEBC. Backward class. They get reservation.

The community that produced the rulers of Odisha for centuries is "backward."

Brahmins are much weaker politically, socially, economically and numerically. Yet they are the ones excluded from every welfare scheme, every quota, every government benefit.

95% of Odisha competes for 50% of seats, jobs, and benefits reserved for them.

5% competes for the other 50%, open to all.

The Supreme Court's Indra Sawhney judgment capped reservation at 50% assuming the general category was a large population competing on merit. In Odisha, that "general category" is 5% of people.

This is not affirmative action. This is not social justice.

When 95% of a population receives state benefits denied to the remaining 5%, there is a word for that.

It is called discrimination and apartheid.

I don’t object to contributing . But after everything I contribute, what am I getting back?

Why can’t India’s middle class get the Singapore deal as a starter— lower taxes, better roads, better transport, better civic infrastructure and greater accountability for every rupee it pays from every authority that extracts a tax in one or other form.
