@dhh@37signals When you are spending that much on RDS, it would be possible to see savings moving to EC2 and self-managing Postgres or whatever your stack is using terraform or cloudformation templates. The cost of engineering resources to continuously manage that may exceed your savings tho.
@dhh@37signals You mentioned reserved instances and term commitments. Have you directly negotiated with your rep? AWS has discount programs managed by cost tags. I set up my current company with MAP as it centralized infrastructure (rebates on tagged spend). When that’s over, will get new deal.
@regulatorynerd Seems likely. Also, it’s easier. A successful portfolio built under this partnership could be acquired at end of the contract term. Why invest in building a bespoke system when you can whitelabel an existing setup and see how it does first? Faster to market. Less downside risk.
