The indigenously developed Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam achieving criticality marks a major breakthrough in Stage-2 of India’s 3-stage nuclear programme.

This 500 MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor uses mixed oxide (MOX) fuel — plutonium and uranium from reprocessed spent fuel — enabling a closed fuel cycle and producing more fissile material than it consumes.

From Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (Stage-1) to Fast Breeder Reactors (Stage-2) and eventually thorium-based reactors (Stage-3), India is unlocking its vast thorium reserves for centuries of clean energy. 🌱

With a breeding ratio greater than 1 and a design life of 40 years, PFBR is a key step towards long-term energy security, reduced import dependence, and clean energy goals.
