In the dynamic world of T20 cricket, identity evolves. Sanju Samson’s journey over the last few years highlights that truth. When he burst onto the scene in his teens, it was clear he had the strokes, the timing, the composure.

Over time, the narrative shifted, and he became more associated with power-hitting, i.e., ranged strikes, big sixes, muscular intent.

What makes his evolution special is that he hasn’t abandoned his roots. He has found a way to coexist, the classical touch alongside the modern firepower. That synthesis is what the T20 format demands most, i.e., intelligence, adaptability, and awareness.

Of course, there has been uncertainty around Samson’s role, whether he bats high in the order, whether he is considered the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, and how the selectors view him amid newer names coming in.

Yet the recent signs are promising. His prolific displays in the IPL and domestic circuits show a higher frequency of impact innings. At 30, he has seen phases of highs and lows, and the resilience and self-awareness he brings today are invaluable.

For India, Samson offers explosive versatility; he can steady the innings or accelerate from ball one.

His high-risk approach makes him dangerous for opposition bowlers, and his experience ensures he knows how to absorb setbacks and keep evolving.
What he needs most now is clarity of role and trust in pressure situations, because big tournaments are won by players who are backed to express themselves fully.

What remains is to harness his talent in a way that aligns with India’s T20I ambitions. In many ways, he bridges the finesse of our cricketing past with the intensity of our present and future. For me, as a follower of Indian cricket and a believer in thoughtful, strategic selection, Sanju Samson is essential for India's prospects to defend the T20 World Cup next year.

This is truly inexplicable. @IamSanjuSamson should have not just been selected, he should have led the side in the absence of all the seniors. His captaincy experience with Kerala and @rajasthanroyals is more current than SKY's. Our selectors need to explain themselves to the cricket-loving public. And why no @yuzi_chahal either?
