“When I was reading the script, I found out that she was a girl from Harbin and then there was also the fact that she was a beipiao (t/n: people who leave their hometowns to live and work in Beijing). I honestly felt like… this was basically me being written into the script. I could barely tell the difference between the character and myself because there were so many similarities between us. Sometimes, the only differences were that I came to Beijing a little earlier, started dancing and doing things like that, and started going out on my own in the city earlier”

“For the proposal scene, I told Jing-ge, I’ve never been to a wedding before. I’m really not into this kind of thing. I don’t think it’s that interesting. And Jing-ge was like, Really? Actually, if you attended a wedding, you’d probably cry the whole time.
I said, No way. That would be way too performative and sentimental. And putting these huge photos of the two people up everywhere? How awkward would that be? Then we started filming Jing-ge’s shots. He said, Shang Zhitao, welcome to the museum of time. And I was just crying uncontrollably. There were photos of her friends, her dog, and then he took out the ring. And the ring was actually our producer’s own ring! after finishing that scene that day, I just felt… it was so beautiful. I thought, I really have to find someone I absolutely love and marry them.

“What I want to tell girls is that you need to have a really strong sense of self-worth. You have to truly believe in yourself and think. If every girl could really internalize that and carry it in her heart, she would be able to have a better relationship with herself, find a better kind of love and a better partner. Fall madly in love with yourself. Believe that you’re amazing. Then, when you look at other people, you won’t have to look away. When you talk to someone, you won’t be worrying about whether you look pretty today or thinking. “Before you encountered Taotao, had you also been waiting all this time for a role like this?”

Sun Qian replied:

“I don’t know which role would become that kind of role for me. I really love every character I’ve ever played.

It was only after The Early Spring, when Shang Zhitao was seen by everyone, that I truly experienced this feeling.

I’m very happy.”

how did shang zhitao come to know you?

i think it might start with her name. the first time i saw her, it was a densely packed name, so seemingly “soft,” yet it contained resilience, courage, sensitivity, humility, and an indomitable spirit… so many seemingly mismatched words. perhaps i was wrong. you can’t understand a person from their name alone. so i searched further, and gradually i saw her face clearly. “outstanding yet not so outstanding” i think this phrase means cute and charming. later, i heard her say, “i’m from harbin, now i’m a migrant worker in beijing. i can endure hardship, i'm not afraid of being tired.” i secretly thought, this girl is so much like me. i really like her.

luckily, we gave each other our hearts, spent time together, resonated with each other. the three months passed both quickly and slowly. i was slow to warm up, and so was she. her story became my memory, and my memory has her image, intertwined, and at some point, we couldn’t distinguish between them. i think i should take responsibility. i’ve read your story, donned your clothes, and lent you my eyes. i wish i could temporarily become you. please let me briefly and immersively experience her life.

we met in early autumn, and we ended in early autumn, but don't forget, we are early spring. so, as long as i want, it will always be sunny.

i never dared to imagine such a wonderful thing could happen to me. thank you everyone for loving me, thank you all for loving me even more than i love myself.
