One of the amazing things about Jem - apart from it being a science fiction magical girl romance - was the series’ emphasis on fashion. There were 443 unique costumes for the 7 main characters in Season 1 alone, not including any supporting characters.
A Deer of Nine Colors is a classic 1981 Chinese animated short film produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. Co-directed by Qian Jiajun and Dai Tielang, it is directly adapted from ancient Buddhist Jataka cave murals found inside Cave 257 of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
The story follows a mystical, compassionate nine-colored deer deity that saves a drowning snake charmer from a turbulent river. In exchange, the man vows to keep the creature's forest sanctuary a secret.
However, blinded by greed when the local queen demands a coat made of the deer's rare fur, the man breaks his promise and leads the royal army to hunt it down.
Confronted by the betrayal, the divine deer manifests its power, turning the flying arrows into dust. The ungrateful man drowns, while the king bans any future hunting of the deer.
