@PyrionFlax I studied lnguistics in uni. In my experience it's not used as much these days, in favor of saying things like "creole," "pidgin," or even just "dialect." Patois can be used unoffensively for sure, but some might find it offensive cuz it can carry a sort of patronizing tone
