Nigeria’s palliative care gap is costing women living with HIV and cancer.
Our qualitative study highlights what providers are seeing on the ground:
✅ Palliative care is valued, but poorly integrated
For evidence to shape policy and influence behaviour, it must be communicated with clarity and purpose. The #NHWSPCFellowship was designed to equip researchers with the skills to make their work impactful beyond the pages of academic reports.
Today, we celebrate the 2025 Science-Policy Communications Fellowship cohort as they graduate after three months of learning, field engagement, and practical storytelling for policy impact.

In Osun, Oyinkansola Fadiji, a lecturer at the Federal University of Health Sciences, is implementing Rabies-Safe Ila-Orangun.
The project is part of a broader One Health effort focused on improving awareness, clearing myths, and promoting preventive actions against rabies. Through four market rallies and a radio programme held around World Rabies Day, the project is helping residents of Ila-Orangun understand bite management, vaccination, and the importance of early medical attention.

In Oyo, Adebisi Lateef of @GETConsortium is implementing From Classrooms to Communities: Understanding Student and Teacher Perceptions of Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Prevention.
This school-based campaign is helping students and teachers understand the dangers of antibiotic misuse and the importance of good hygiene practices. So far, the project has reached eight schools across Oyo State, improving awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance and encouraging sustainable hygiene habits that protect entire communities.

When we launched the #NHWSPCFellowship, our goal was clear: address the gap between evidence generation and policy decisions as well as behavior change in Nigeria by strengthening the public health researchers ability to communicate evidence in ways that inspire action.
The fellows are bringing that vision to life through capstone projects tackling real health challenges across Nigeria.
A thread👇
Building on this experience, the fellows have now begun implementing their capstone projects, applying their learning to influence policy, shape public behaviour, and strengthen Nigeria’s health systems.
Stay tuned as we share highlights from their projects in the coming weeks.

Effective science communication is key to closing the gap between research and policy in Africa. Without it, vital evidence that could address the continent’s pressing health challenges may be overlooked in decision-making.
On 10 July 2025, we launched the Science-Policy Communications Fellowship to equip public health researchers with the skills to translate evidence into policy and inspire behaviour change.
