HaAretz’ Jack Khoury has articulated the Zionist entity’s disappointment over the election of al-Hayya as Hamas’ political bureau leader, as it evinces that Gaza remains the stronghold of Hamas’ political thinking and that Hamas will continue its close relationship to Iran and the Axis of Resistance.

The article mistakenly treats the Saudi publication, Asharq, as credible despite Hamas has issued myriad denunciations of its reports.

Khalil al-Hayya has been elected chairman of Hamas' political bureau and overall leader of the group, Hamas said Monday, replacing Yahya Sinwar, who was assassinated by Israel in 2024.
Al-Hayya previously served as head of Hamas' negotiating team and as interim chairman of the political bureau. He defeated Khaled Mashal, who led the political bureau until 2017.

In May, al-Hayya's son, Azzam, died after suffering life-threatening wounds in an Israeli strike on Gaza, a senior Hamas official said. He was al-Hayya's fourth son to be killed in an Israeli attack.
Al-Hayya was among the targets of an Israeli strike in Doha in September, alongside Zaher Jabareen, who oversees Hamas' West Bank operations. According to Hamas-affiliated media, Azzam's twin brother was killed in the strike.
Qatari sources said the strike targeted a Hamas headquarters during discussions over a U.S. proposal for a Gaza cease-fire, while Hamas-affiliated sources claimed the proposal was a "trap to lure Hamas officials into talks to strike them."
In October, al-Hayya met U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in his role as Hamas' chief negotiator. Witkoff, who lost his son to a drug overdose, offered al-Hayya his condolences one month after the loss of his son.
"We expressed our condolences to him for the loss of his son. He mentioned it, and I told him that I had lost a son and that we were both members of a really bad club: parents who have buried children," Witkoff said, in an interview with CBS News' 60 Minutes.

Following Israel's assassination of Yahya Sinwar, a temporary leadership council was formed in May under the chairmanship of Shura Council head Ismail Darwish.
The council included Mashal and al-Hayya, as well as Jabareen, who is seen as a representative of Palestinian prisoners, and political bureau member Nizar Awadallah.
After a cease-fire was declared, Hamas decided to dissolve the interim body and hold elections for permanent leadership.
