In late 1951, an Egyptian delegation went to Yemen to search, purchase, and make microfilm copies of manuscripts.
Their discoveries were remarkable, including many Muʿtazili works, long thought to have been lost.

The ms of Ibn al-Kalbi's (al-Mathalib-المثالب-the Vices) preserved in Dar el-Kotob, Cairo.
The ms is undated (probably from the 7th century H).
Due to its "sensitive" content & the challenges over the author's credibility, the work has been ignored, & there's no scholarly edition
والكتاب الذي طبع مرات قديما بلا تحقيق ولا اعتناء يُذكر، كان قد صدر جزء منه محققاً حتى مناقب أبي بكر عام 1996، وقد استكمل المحقق تحقيق الكتاب وصدر كاملا مؤخراً
كتاب الردة والفتوح لأبي الحسن علي بن محمد القرشي تـ348 ومناقب عمر بن الخطاب لابن أبي عاصم بن الضحاك تـ287 وكتاب الأحداث لأبي عبيد القاسم بن سلام وعشرات المصادر المفقودة الأخرى سردها محب الدين الطبري عند ذكره للمصادر التي اعتمد عليها في مقدمة كتابه الرياض النضرة في مناقب العشرة
وقد قوبل كل من النصين بجملة من الردود،،
منها كتاب في إثبات النبوة لمحمد لمؤلف مجهول، حقق ونُشِر ملحقاً بهذه الدراسة عن ابن كمونة.
أما الردود على كتاب السموأل فمنها ما نُشِر قطع منه في هذا المجلد الصادر مؤخراً عن كامبريدج لمؤلف يهودي ربّاني مجهول.
هذان نصّان نقيضان..

وهو في نصرة اليهودية والمنافحة عن التوراة وإنكار تحريفه، تضمن ردوداً على مقاطع من كتاب السموأل المذكور
Besides Ibn Saʿ'd's Tabaqat and late works like al-Isaba by Ibn Ḥajar.
An important source, though rarely mentioned, is (Mu’jam al-Sahaba) by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (829-929), one of the earliest works to give biographical information about the Prophet’s companions.
