Our Fisheries Minister, like many others in the cabinet, clearly lacks the knowledge, experience and strategic vision needed to safeguard the nation’s long-term interests. Applauding the fact that China is canning and adding value to our raw fish shows a serious misunderstanding of economic priorities.

Exporting raw fish to China under the FTA may offer short-term benefits ,such as market access and foreign revenue ,but it severely limits the Maldives’ long-term potential. The true value lies in processing, canning, branding and exporting finished products ourselves. These are the steps that create local jobs, develop skills and drive real economic growth.

By handing over the value-added segment of the supply chain to foreign companies, we forfeit income and remain dependent on others. If we are serious about empowering our fisheries sector and building a sustainable economy, we must invest in domestic processing capacity and promote premium, locally branded Maldivian fish products to the global market. Anything less is a wasted opportunity.

We’re not Dubai ,we’re a nation where people are struggling. Instead of wasting public money on glorifying individuals, why not use it to benefit the public? Give that money to @bankofmaldives to remove the 30% TEMO commission for one month,that would help real people.

Reports say this show is being handled by Event Maldives, with a big chunk likely going into pockets,MACL DMD Lamman’s and then @MMuizzu , to keep MPs happy with monthly payouts Rf50000.
