NEW: The Wall Street Journal editorial board weighs in on Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s head tax proposal ⬇️
“There are bad ideas, really bad ideas, and then there is whatever Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is proposing next. His latest desire is a head tax on job creation in the city…”
“Most cities pay for public safety in the general budget, and Chicago wouldn’t need what it calls a ‘safety surcharge’ if it didn’t spend so much on pensions and debt service. The head tax won’t bring in $100 million in revenue, but it will send many heads relocating to places where they don’t get taxed for coming to the office.”
You know where this kind of thing never happens?
The 98 countries around the world (including 🇨🇦,🇬🇧,🇳🇿, and 🇮🇹) that have privatized or corporatized their ATC systems so they are funded by user fees, not government appropriations.
🇺🇸 can do it too!
BREAKING: Delayed property tax collections have forced emergency lending into Chicago’s pension funds in order to avoid asset sales.
The Chicago firefighters’ pension fund did not have the cash on hand to pay *current retirees.*
This is what insolvency looks like.
And it’s exactly why Chicago CFO Jill Jaworski and Mayor Brandon Johnson should have been screaming from the rooftops to oppose the pension sweetener bill just passed in Springfield that dropped the police and fire pensions to 18% funded—the worst in the nation.
The Commerce Secretary suggests we can finance a $7 trillion federal budget without any American paying any taxes.
This would require a universal 220% tariff that inexplicably does not reduce imports at all, and is somehow entirely paid by foreigners. Pure economic illiteracy.
I'm all about balancing the federal budget, but it's preeeeeetty rich that Republicans went wild for that line, seeing as they proposed a budget 5 seconds ago that will cause the debt & deficit to explode 🥰
No, you can't magically declare the ERA is the 28th amendment
No, you can't magically ignore birthright citizenship which is protected by the 14th Amendment.
Presidents are not kings
Ohhhh so people think the disease in the healthcare system is due to individual cackling bad villains and not due to layers of perverse incentives and backfiring regulations, I see
you’d think people who are routinely terrified of certain outcomes in presidential elections would be the strongest advocates for limiting executive power. you’d think.
I'm perfectly willing to believe that big pharma is abusing patent law, which can be corrected by not granting idiotic patents (or reforming the law accordingly).
But if drugs are cheaper in France, why not just let Americans buy those drugs and ship them here? Oh right, because that's illegal under U.S. law.
These are government problems, not market problems.
nobody will remember:
-your salary
-how “busy you were”
-how many hours you worked
people will remember:
- do you wear wigs
- have you worn wigs
- will you wear wigs
- when will you wear wigs

This is Laurens van Beek.
Not long ago, he was kicked out of the U.S.—even though he immigrated here as a child. Legally.
The kicker: If his family had come *illegally* he would've gotten to stay.
A thread on our insane immigration system.
#AppellateTwitter take note: it looks like there is now a *Supreme Court* citation (Murthy n.7) for the oft-repeated proposition that "judges are not like pigs, hunting for truffles buried in the record."
This is great news. But it's also an indictment on how ludicrous occupational licensing is & can be.
For years, people in Louisiana had to pass a written exam & get a license to...sell or arrange flowers & bouquets. I promise you it was never about safety.
It is my very controversial opinion that armed agents of the government should not be spending time & taxpayer resources cracking down on people selling fruit without a license. Somehow I don’t feel safer.
