@Preddy85@KoshikSingh5 Minister directly firing cops makes the latter vulnerable to political pressure. Abuse by rogue cops can be addressed through a system where the matter can be deliberated and a cabinet group can take a call on the merits.
@Preddy85@KoshikSingh5 Direct accountability to ministers isn't a good idea. There should be accountability but a degree of separation as well to prevent direct intervention in particular trials/cases. Maybe an autonomous prosecutorial system with accountability to the cabinet or some such arrangement
@simonbchen Pressures faced by PIs is somewhat different from the that of grad students and techs who may be more patient and accepting of their ill-luck but susceptible to pressure from above.
1. #Khalistan issue suddenly getting publicity.
2. Hard to see how US/other countries stay silent if more assassinations feared/expected on their territories.
3. Legal/intelligence coop likely to be adversely affected.
On balance, not sure there's an upside to this for India.
Let me get this straight. Special exemptions for targeted killings are only for the US and Israel but everyone else, get to the back of the bus.
Jake Sullivan must think the rest of the world is dumb. How can the US take the moral high ground when the country has frequently and repeatedly used drone attacks for extra judicial assassinations?
It appears that India lacked enough evidence to establish dual criminality for this #Nijjar which is why extradition didn't happen but someone should ask both governments about this and figure out what happened. #canadaindia
Trudeau could have played this differently, handled this much more diplomatically with private talks with Indian officials rather than proclaiming this from the rooftop on the first day of Parliament. Relations with India were already bad after his screw ups in 2018 and at the G20. But now there's a real possibility of rupture in formal diplomatic relations which would be disastrous for Canada when the US, Europe and the UK are knocking on India's door, a rising power, as a counterweight to China.
@drmathewjohn Someone I know has been on both sides of this, first as a consultant in India who got annoyed by a similar quizzing experience from a colleague in the West but when the person moved to the West became more understanding of where that colleague had been coming from.
@AdiG1993 Not necessarily. They claim to cure cancer (incurable by modern medicine) also. I suppose it is more about what appeals as a marketing strategy - based on beliefs/susceptibilities/willingness to pay of the target audience.
