World Environment Day 2026 Webinar | Adapting Biomanufacturing to Address Climate Change | #NowForClimate

Dr. Shireesh Srivastava, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (@ICGEBNewDelhi), New Delhi, highlighted an innovative biotechnology-driven approach to addressing carbon and nitrogen sustainability challenges using cyanobacteria for carbon capture and nutrient recycling.

Focusing on the potential of robust marine cyanobacteria to utilize high concentrations of CO₂ and urea, he demonstrated how these microorganisms can generate oxygen- and nutrient-rich biomass for applications in fertilizer, food, and feed.

Through adaptive evolution and process optimization, the research achieved over 96% CO₂ capture efficiency from simulated flue gas, showcasing a promising pathway for sustainable biomanufacturing and climate mitigation.

Extending beyond Earth-based applications, Dr. Srivastava also highlighted pioneering experiments conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), exploring cyanobacterial growth and nutrient recycling under microgravity conditions.

The findings offer valuable insights for developing sustainable life-support systems for future space missions while advancing circular bioeconomy solutions on Earth.
