As Putin again rains death and destruction down on Kyiv, we’re publishing an investigation, based on newly leaked documents, into Russia’s influence operations in Europe.
Described in an internal file as “cognitive strikes” against the West, they include both “online disinformation” and real-world elements 👇

❗️ Hungary lifts veto on Ukraine’s accession bid.
Hungary has reached an agreement with Ukraine regarding the expansion of the rights of the Hungarian minority, @magyarpeterMP announced.
As Ukraine keeps striking Russian oil infrastructure, Russia continues to target Ukrainian civilians.
Here is the apartment of our colleague Yanina Korniienko in Kyiv. Yesterday there was a strike nearby. Windows blown in, with glass shards all over her bed. The wall of the building cracked.
Fortunately, Yanina wasn't at home — her outlet @Slidstvo_info arranges for journalists to stay at secure hotels during especially heavy nights of bombardment.
Bonkers video from earlier today in St. Petersburg, where Russian police try to shoot down a Ukrainian drone, while bystanders casually video the effort (and the burning oil terminal in the background).
A Ukrainian drone hit a Simferopol-bound civilian bus in Yenakiieve, in Russian-occupied Donetsk, killing seven and wounding 11, according to Denis Pushilin, the Russian-installed "DNR" head. https://t.co/L7GmBC3Ue0
I quoted her briefly in my story from this winter about what Ukraine's journalists endured during the cold and the blackouts. “At my apartment I have an hour-and-a-half of electricity per day,” she said then.
The things Russia puts Ukrainians through. And for what?

Yanina (@_yanina_k_) is a fierce investigative reporter, and also super nice and pleasant to work with (this can be a rare combination). She's done tons of great work and will do lots more.
Ukrainian attack drones opened this year's Russian Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, successfully striking the city's fuel and oil maritime terminal this morning.
Seen here, numerous Ukrainian drones slam into the terminal.
Citizens of EU countries, You should realize your authorities have unilaterally entered into a war with Russia. So be vigilant and don't be surprised by anything. The peaceful sleep is over. But you know who to ask why!
@Biomaven Another case of "The way things were before you were born was too primitive; the way things changed after you turned 30 are confusing and scary and annoying. The perfect way for things to be is how they were when you were young." :)
@brianstelter@nxthompson I’m in those good years too, now, and I know it because I keep reading things like this. And it’s true - they ARE good. But also, I’m not quite sure what to do next with this information. They’re still flying by and there’s no stopping them…
This is an incredible demonstration, comparing a leaked Russian army map with the generally reliable DeepState map, of how the Russian generals think they're fighting kilometers ahead of where the front lines actually are.
British intelligence says nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war on Ukraine. They don’t say how they arrived at this figure. Previous estimates have been considerably lower — CSIS and Meduza estimated between 250-350K. But those methodologies are known to be undercounts.
Whatever the true number is, and it’s rising by the hundreds every day, you have to go back to Josef Stalin to find a Russian leader who has massacred as many of his own people.
(Also, keep in mind that if you add the severely wounded, total casualties are probably over a million by most estimates. That’s roughly 5 times more than the United States, a much more populous country, lost in Vietnam.)
From a recent day of no journalism, only biking. Amsterdam to Utrecht along the Rijnkanaal. All blue and green. Is there a more sublime pleasure in this earthly life than riding a bike through dappled sun under the trees?
