This is the historic moment today when the world decided that a new global tax system is needed, it is possible, and they are going to work for it.
At the @UN.
It was a pleasure to chat with The Economist's @ecurrnomics about billionaires, the future of taxation and democracy.
Comments welcome, as always.

At our webinar Reshaping Global Rules, moderated by Shereen Talaat, we explored how feminist economics can help advance global tax governance rooted in redistribution, repair, and economic justice.
✊ #TaxJustice is #FeministJustice
🧵 Global tax rules continue to reflect systems of extraction that deprive countries in the Global South of vital public resources through tax avoidance, profit shifting, and illicit financial flows.
These structures are not gender neutral _they deepen inequalities and shape the

High profits (and expectation of future profits) are pushing top wealth shares past their Covid peak, to levels not seen since the early 20th century/
Here's the top 0.1% wealth share/
Average income per adult grew 1.9% (net of inflation) in 2025.
But for the bottom 50% there was no growth.
And for the next 40% very little.
Almost all the growth was concentrated in the top 10%.
It seems we are now entering a new phase of the rise of inequality in the US.
It's not just wealth and billionaires — it's a broader acceleration.
Here's who benefited from economic growth in 2025, according to the latest estimates available on https://t.co/arZRWrEZEv
"Extreme wealth means extreme power."
Power to cement monopolies. To own the media. To buy elections.

Billionaires pay about half as much in taxes as everyone else. So why do we let them? Simple: because they have better lobbyists than us.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. History tells us that we can actually win this fight. When the income tax was first proposed, they predicted catastrophe. Same arguments, same “bullshit bingo” we hear today – and democracy still prevailed.
It can again. That’s why I’m excited to team up with @gabriel_zucman to ensure it does.
We are excited to be supporting this exciting event marking 40 years of the New Economics Foundation!
We will hear from @AndyBurnhamGM on his vision for a new localism and @Jayati1609 on how we change the rules of the global economic order.

The webinar is a kick-off space for the #IAFFE community to explore:
🔹 How feminist economics can reshape global tax rules
🔹 Pressure points in current negotiations
🔹 Making the #UNTaxConvention a tool for redistribution, repair and transformative change
These tax structures are also shaped by colonial and gendered power dynamics, with real consequences for women, girls and LGBTQI+ communities everywhere.
The global tax system is rooted in colonial extraction, fueling inequality worldwide. The OECD-led rules have long enabled profit-shifting by corporations, tax evasion by the ultra-wealthy and illicit financial flows.
