Notifiable Medical Conditions (NMCs) are diseases of public health importance that can cause outbreaks with high fatality rates, nationally and internationally.
With World NTD Day approaching on 30 January 2026, we highlight how Africa is working together to reduce the viral NTD burden and transition from control to elimination. In South Africa, human rabies cases are still a major public health concern.
NTDs affect over a billion people globally, causing preventable illness, disability, stigma, and thousands of deaths each year—while deepening poverty and inequality.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are bacterial, parasitic, and viral illnesses that mostly affect people living in the world’s poorest communities. In South Africa, several NTDs remain endemic—impacting those in rural areas, informal settlements, and conflict-affected settings.
@WHO is working with South Africa’s Health and Basic Education Departments and academic partners in Gauteng this week to prepare for the 2026 Mass Drug Administration for schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths and to reduce the burden of neglected tropical diseases.
Fungal Infections are a Global Health Concern
Resistant infections of ringworm and sporotrichosis have emerged with some skin infections listed as Neglected Tropical Diseases. Fungal diseases are spreading and becoming harder to treat.
#FungalWeek25
Misdiagnosis of fungal diseases can lead to severe illness and the development of antimicrobial resistance, if you are given the wrong treatment. If you are taking medication and not getting better, ask your doctor about fungal disease testing.

Fungal diseases are often overlooked, but awareness can be life-saving.
With increased knowledge, we can:
• Encourage testing and early diagnosis
• Support global One Health action
• Inspire more research in prevention and treatment
Awareness makes a difference
