When I read these “grand chessboard” analyses about Qatar, Trump, Israel, and Iran, I can’t help but feel that they are just another form of Westsplaining. That is, when the West insists on explaining to itself that the Arab world doesn’t really mean what it says - that the slogans, the ideology, the alliances, the blood spilled - are all just bargaining chips in some clever deal.

But the truth is, our own leadership thrives on this exact delusion. They play into it, knowing that Americans and Europeans prefer to imagine a 4D chess match rather than face the reality: that movements like Hamas, and their patrons in Doha, actually mean what they say.

Analysts want to believe that Qatar will “choose business over ideology,” that it will throw away Hamas and the language of muqawama in exchange for investments and Trump’s blessing. But this ignores decades of evidence: Qatar’s legitimacy in the Arab street comes precisely from its role as the spiritual and financial hub of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. To expect them to give this up for “normalization” is fantasy.

Palestinian leaders lean on Western wishful thinking. They say one thing in English and another in Arabic, knowing that the West will always choose to believe the softer version. It’s easier for the West to assume that every slogan about resistance, every threat, every rejection of normalization is just posturing. That is Westsplaining at its core: assuming Arabs don’t really mean what they say, only what Westerners want to hear.

Who pays for this game? We do. Ordinary Palestinians. Instead of a serious strategy for statehood, prosperity, and dignity, our leaders cling to symbols and alliances that keep us locked in perpetual conflict. While they cash in on Qatari jets, Trump-connected business deals, and secret understandings, we remain trapped.

Westsplaining blinds both outsiders and ourselves. The West fools itself into thinking our leaders are pragmatists in disguise, while our leaders exploit that illusion to avoid responsibility and accountability.

The hard truth: unless our leadership openly, clearly, and consistently breaks with Hamas, with the politics of eternal victimhood, and with the addiction to foreign patrons who trade Palestinian suffering for regional influence - no amount of “4D chess” will change the reality on the ground.

Qatar is not a savior. And as long as we, Palestinians, allow our leadership to lean on these illusions, our people will continue to pay the price.

The application of the word genocide to refer to tens of thousands of war deaths is, I mean, I think it is a kind of blood libel. It's trying to import the moral opprobrium that we associate with genocide to a designated enemy, in this case, Israel. I think because I alluded to my side bias, the sides in this case being the sides that a lot of hard left critical theory has defined, namely white oppressors against everyone else's victims.

Well, it is a blood libel in the sense that it is an accusation of deliberate murder, ill-founded in that the, and one could disagree with Israel's campaign against Gaza, one could say that this is not justifiable, it's not a just war. It's still different from deliberately murdering as many people as possible, as in, and we know there have been genocides. I think it really is a terrible blood libel, and it's a sign of how people's moralizing in the service of demonizing and dichotomizing, dividing the world into good and evil can just flatten their ability to analyze and to think clearly.

Het is opvallend dat bijna niémand nog inhoudelijk ingaat op de obscene beschuldiging van “genocide” in Gaza. De reacties op mijn post vallen uiteen in twee categorieën:

- “Pff, dit is gewoon semantische haarkloverij en mierengeneuk. Waarom ben je zo geobsedeerd?”
Ah bon. Het gaat hier over de "misdaad der misdaden", een aparte categorie die we hebben bedacht voor de meest uitzonderlijke misdaden. En deze reactie komt dus nadat iedereen al twee jaar lang gedwóngen wordt om het g-woord uit te spreken: kranten, politici, acamedici, NGO's. Een onvoorstelbare lichtzinnigheid die we in geen enkel ander domein zouden aanvaarden (“Het Westen pleegde een genocide in Mosul en Raqqa!” / “Churchill pleegde een genocide in Dresden!”).

- “Hier heb je een lijst van organisaties die zeggen dat het wél een genocide is. En nu gij.”
Een zuiver autoriteitsargument dus — en bovendien een zwak argument. NGO’s zijn onverkozen en zelfverklaarde cenakels die steeds meer door ideologie worden besmet, geen wetenschappelijke organen met kwaliteitsgaranties. En dat is net mijn punt: elke NGO en elke academicus wordt al meer dan twee jaar onder druk gezet om het g-woord te gebruiken.

Als het stof is neergedaald, zal dit de geschiedenis ingaan als de grootste leugen van onze tijd. Geen enkele andere vorm van "fake news" kon op zoveel bijval rekenen van culturele en academische elites. Heel veel collega's en vrienden hebben me hier enorm teleurgesteld, omdat ze zich niet uitspraken tegen deze onzin, of uiteindelijk zelfs overstag gingen en het woord zelf in de mond namen (ik zal geen namen noemen, het zijn er toch teveel).

Steven Pinker (@sapinker) heeft gelijk: dit is de moderne versie van de “bloedsmaad”, de middeleeuwse fabel dat Joden het bloed van christelijke kinderen gebruikten bij de bereiding van matzes voor het Pesachfeest.

This is correct. The test is simple. Duriing the period between October 7 and the beginning of Israel's military campaign did we see sympathy that was subsequently lost by the ferocity of that campaign? We did not. what we saw - especially on campuses was the celebration or rationalisation of the mass murder, sexualised sadism and torture and hostage taking as legitimate resistance against colonial oppressors irrespective if they were children, Nova festival goers, elderly holocaust survivors, people who had spent lives working for peace. Now there are some more to report. In a thread from mid-March, discussion turns to the Iran war. ‘I hope Iran can destroy Israel and leave no-one there,’ writes another member of the group. Shahin replies: ‘Iran should hit the Whitehouse. It is the headquarters for evil.’

g) The genocide abruptly stopped with a ceasefire agreement.
