As the world embraces ever more foolish trends and desperate attempts for attention through short clips and social media theatrics, it is deeply disappointing to witness ignorant celebrities and public figures pelting the Jamarāt in an incorrect and reckless manner. In doing so, they completely lose sight of the objectives, sanctity, and seriousness of these sacred rites, reducing them to a joke for entertainment and online engagement.

Part of Ḥajj is ensuring that every ʿamal is performed according to the Sunnah. Instead, some have turned these sacred moments into scenes of amusement, laughter, filming, and mockery.

The Jamarāt are from the shaʿāʾir of Allah ﷻ, not a spectacle for social media. The Prophet ﷺ carried out these rites with humility, takbīr, composure, and reverence. Today, many rush through the Jamarāt heedlessly, ignoring even the basic requirements, whilst laughing, recording videos, joking, and behaving as though they are tourists at an attraction rather than servants of Allah fulfilling one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam.

Aʿishah (r.a.) Narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said regarding the rites of Ḥajj:

“The purpose of ṭawāf around the House, and the saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwah, and pelting the Jamarāt is the establishment of the remembrance of Allah.” (Tirmidhī)

Meaning: so that Allah is remembered in these blessed places. Therefore, beware of heedlessness.

These rites were specifically mentioned because, outwardly, they may appear to be simple actions in which the reality of worship is not immediately visible. In truth, they are pure acts of servitude carried out solely in submission and obedience to Allah.

The sanctity of these sacred places is gradually being eroded as tourism culture and social media vanity dominate the minds of many. Worse still, countless Muslims undertake these obligations without first seeking the necessary knowledge of their dīn. Ḥajj is not a holiday, performance, or content opportunity. It is an obligation built upon submission, humility, dhikr, and adherence to the Sunnah.
